How are drywall screws different from other screws??

They're cheapest to buy

If you are looking for a new drill/driver, spend a little more to get one with torque adjustment and a quick change chuck.

I like this one:

http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=23106-79992-FS1800D&lpage=none

It has a removable chuck so you can put your drill bit in the chuck, and then quickly remove it to use the screwdriver part.

It also has the torque adjustment and the 18v battery will last a pretty long time.

I'm no carpenter, but I have built several coops and housing for birds, etc and always use screws. I just am not that handy with a hammer, and as I'm usually building by myself, it's easier to use screws than to try to hold the wood steady and hammer it at the same time.

Plus, if you 'screw' up (pun intended

) you can take it apart very quickly if you've used screws and try again!

The more you pay, the better the quality. This is one time when "you get what you pay for" speaks volumes. My Dad still has his old plug in Black and Decker that he bought close to 40 years ago! It still works like the day it was made. We haven't done it any favors either over the year. If you got to home depot or wherever and look at drill, you can pay just about whatever you want, from the obligatory $19.99 to three or four hundred dollars. Go middle to low range and you should be OK. I’ve abused the crap out of my $55 B&D. It never has asked me for anything.

Hi Anny,

DeWalt and Porter Cable brands give the best bang for the buck in my experience.
14.4 volt is a good compromise between weight, power, and cost.
You'll need a minimum of two batteries and a charger with the drill (often sold as a kit).

Good luck,
spot

I just finished one section of a two-section 8x8x8 coop. Each section is 4x8 and 8' high. I put all of my framing together with 2x4's (1 1/2" x 3 1/2") using a large box of 8 x 2 1/2-inch, Phillips Square-Driv Deck Mate Premium All Purpos Exterior Screws and my Rigid 18-volt drill. I bought everything at Home Depot.

When putting the plywood or osb boards on, use the shorter deck screws or wallboard screws. I bought a large box of 7 x1 5/8-inch, Phillips Square-Driv Deck Mate Premium All Purpos Exterior Screws.

Remember, too, that the stores have large saws that will cut your panels and boards you buy to any custom size you need. That can save you a lot of time, and their machines/saws are deadly accurate with the cutting.

Oh yeah - I 2nd that about getting the home improvement store to do your rough cuts for you!

My van won't hold a full piece of plywood, so I always have them do the rough cutting for me. Saves me a ton of time and energy later. They don't charge a thing to do the cuts - just pay for the piece of wood!

I highly recommend you take advantage of that service if you need plywood cut. Their machine does perfect rip and cross cuts - perfectly 90 degrees, etc.

If you are going to use nails #16 coated if you are going to use screws dont use drywall screws use a larger coated screw comparable to a #16 nail. Now Im going to tell yea that chicken manure will rust out most nails, screws, and staples.
