This is the latest news I have on NAIS. I wanted to share, & we still need to fight this until it is dropped completely.

On Friday, the House voted to approve the 2007 Farm Bill. The final language of the bill
did NOT include NAIS, so we won this round!!! The Agriculture Committee and
Representatives received many phone calls and faxes from people opposed to NAIS, and they
responded by taking out the language that linked NAIS to Country of Origin Labeling.
THANK YOU to everyone who took the time to call and write.

This is a great step forward. But there are still several battles coming up. The House
will probably vote on the Agriculture Appropriations Bill early this week. The
Appropriations Committee Report includes:

* No new funding for NAIS until USDA provides a "complete and detailed strategic
plan for the program, including tangible outcomes, measurable goals, specific milestones,
and necessary resources for the entire program."
* $1.98 million for a cooperative agreement with the Wisconsin Livestock Identification
Consortium, which supports NAIS
* $594,000 for the Farm Animal Identification and Records (FAIR) program

The lack of new funding specifically for NAIS is a good step! But it doesn't look like
Congress has really gotten the message that we want funding for NAIS stopped, and having a
detailed USDA plan will not change that fact. And funding the Wisconsin Consortium and
FAIR programs will continue to push the program ahead with federal funding.

No amendments have been filed yet, but it is possible that an amendment will be offered to
completely strip NAIS funding. It's also possible that the other side will get an
amendment introduced to add unconditional funding back in.

The Senate Agriculture Appropriations bill has also been reported out of Committee, with a
recommendation for continued funding for NAIS, but less funding than in previous years.
No date has been set yet for the Senate vote.

If you haven't called your Congressman and Senators about NAIS recently, do it now! Go to
http://www.house.gov/writerep/ and http://www.senate.gov/general/contact_information/senators_cfm.cfm . Or call the Capitol Switchboard at (202) 224-3121 or toll-free 877-851-6437.

Thanks for posting this, I'm very grateful it didn't pass. I don't think I was aware of FAIR, can you explain how that is different from NAIS? Is is just a matter of some farmers IDing some animals rather than everyone being forced to get all of their "farm" animals ID'd?

I'm not familiar with FAIR either. I will have to research more on it. It is in Wisconsin as far I have found out, & not here in Texas. As I said, I'll have to check on Wisconsin's laws to research it. When I find out exactly what it is, I'll post it.

I can save you some google time and tell you that FAIR is not specifically at Wisconsin thing. The above quoted text kinda makes it sound like it is but only because 2 programs are getting federal money to help offset the costs of the programs. Thats the readers digest version anyway, its way more in depth than that but the past has proven more info is not wanted on this website. Here are a few links to get people started though.

*Wonders to self how people can be against things they know nothing about. This stuff is not new at all.

Latest news I have receiced:

FARM BILL

As previously announced, the House of Representatives voted to approve the Farm Bill
without any provision for mandatory animal ID. THANK YOU to everyone who called, emailed
or faxed! You helped hold back the industry push for NAIS!

The next round will be in the Senate. They are taking a vacation during the month of
August, which gives us all the opportunity to try to catch them in person! Call your
Senators' offices and ask if he or she will be in your area during the month of August. If
they are, ask for a meeting to discuss NAIS. You can find out who your Senators are, and
their contact information, on the Senate’s home page, http://www.senate.gov/

In
addition to contacting your own Senators, contact:

* Senator Harkin, Chair of Agriculture Committee, (p) 202-224-2035, (f) 202-224-1725
* Senator Chambliss, Ranking Minority Member of Agriculture Committee, (p) 202-224-3521,
(f) 202-224-0103

Tell them that you do not want NAIS, under any name, included in the Farm Bill or any
other bill.

FUNDING

The House of Representatives has also voted to approve the Agriculture Appropriations bill
for 2008. The bill, as passed, did not include funding for NAIS. But it did include
funding for the Wisconsin Livestock Identification Consortium (WLIC) and the Farm Animal
Identification and Records program (FAIR). WLIC developed the database that most states
use for NAIS, and FAIR appears to be simply a part of NAIS under a different name.

Like the Farm Bill, the next step with the funding is in the Senate. The Senate
Appropriations Committee has recommended almost $20 million in new funding for NAIS, in
addition to funding WLIC and FAIR. We expect the bill to be voted on by the full Senate in
September.

PETITIONS

People from across the country collected signatures on petitions opposing NAIS, and sent
them to Karin Bergener and Judith McGeary, members of the Liberty Ark Coalition Steering
Committee. We combined all of the petitions, and Judith delivered them to the Senate
Agriculture Committee and Senate Agriculture Appropriations Subcommittee last week. They
totaled approximately 1,400 pages of signatures!

While meeting with the senior staff for Senators on the Agriculture Committee, Judith also
delivered signatures from Arkansas, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and
Texas to those offices.

If you have signatures that you haven't sent in yet, it’s not too late! The fight over
NAIS is a long-term war, and there will be opportunities in the future. The more petition
signatures we have, the better. This is a true grassroots movement, and our petitions help
show that! Send signed petitions to:
