Naked Neck/Turken Thread

Hey Lisa, here is my little non NN "Splash" roo replacement 'want-to-be'. He loves looking in the back window to see if I am coming out with treats. He is really sweet....in fact, all my NNs are sweet. I will be taking the two NN roos to the chicken selling store tomorrow to see if I can sell them. They are great and I love watching them outside, but I only want one roo. He has a weird comb, like a lot of pimples on top of each other....is that considered a pea comb, too? Or what would you call it?

Here are my babies playing outside.

That is just precious, Becky, I can see they are not spoiled AT ALL : )
That's the crazy comb I mentioned he might inherit from his father, does it look like this?
400

Kev thought it looks like rose comb, but in person looks more like a strawberry comb on steroids to me.

I just got 3 pullets from the farm store. they are yellow with some black splashed in there. Do any of you know, will they be white? or spash?

Have some eggs in the incubator

Hen:Barred Rock

Father: NN( of course)

So far I have gotten two chipmunks and one necked neck chick off of my Naked Neck roo (all tiny for some reason)

Mother: SLW/RSL

Mother: BSL

I thought I had a picture of the other one....I think the chipmunk color comes from my NN he has EE in him

OMG! It may end up looking like that down the road, but right now, it's still small! Ugg....not sure I like that crazy looking comb! hahahaha! Here are some cute shots from today.

This is Gray Top. He has a strange comb, too.

This is Splash. I don't know if you can zoom on his comb or not.

strawberry is genetically rose plus pea. pea reduces wattles quite a lot, your breeder roo has normal wattles that indicate he doesn't have pea. breeds with rose combs are yokohamas and malays, check out their wattles- either very small or absent.

rose comb can vary a lot too- for wyandottes, the ideal type is very flat/low to the head and smooth(compare their wattles with yokos and malays). redcaps are the opposite- huge rose combs with very pronounced spikes. most are somewhere in between.

there are genes that affect the size and number of spikes, especially obvious on rose combs.

if theyre yellow with distinct black spots on the down(not feathers) they probably will be white.

if the black is on the feathers.. would be easier to guess with pictures.

congrats on your new birds!

Barred NN have Bsd and not B barring, is that what you're saying? I'm new to poultry genetics.

I really should not write at middle of night after being away from home... my writing is crappy enough as is..... :)

Bsd is uncommon in the hobby. It's pretty much limited to production bred lines like California Grays but sometimes can be found in white breeds(as I did in that white show stock NN roo) as it helps a ton to clear up the white and also really cleans the legs to a very clear yellow or white. Does a much better job at clearing the legs of smut(black coloring) than regular barring(B).

I was replying in my mind to the point about autosexing chicks.. Bsd is better for that than regular barring because the difference is much more marked in the chicks. If this is not important then just ignore it and go with the kind of barring you prefer.

also, pure Bsd roosters are nearly all white, hens are much lighter and more like cuckoo.

Oh ok I thought he wanted to sell chicks. Well it is day 22and no pips in my eggs they are just wiggling do you think they have a chance?

If they are wiggling, you are good. Remember, you don't count the day that you set them. Also, factors like temperature in incubator going up and down, or actually being lower than what you thermometer is reading, can delay them hatching as well.
