that's why I want more. I swear he was a Cornish cross. Short and wide!
sorry to hear that

Just wondering what hatchery seems to have more blue NN's? I bought a nn chick at a feed store and was the prettiest red and blue coloring but I mainly see a lot of red and buffs coming from hatcheries

Yeah that's very true. now thinking about it, don't recall any blue from hatchery stock..... wonder if that chick was from a local source rather than a hatchery? The only other colors from hatcheries in far lesser numbers are buff mottle, birchen(dark with some brown highlights), some whites, very few black and whites. All other color N I had were either made by myself or from other backyarders.

as mentioned BYC can be source of 'other colored' NN. I think Nava is also working with blue laced red NN? I was too but am dropping this project- just one hen right now. might start on a large fowl silver lace....

Kev ~ Thank you. Yes, I am mostly looking for fun/pet to keep for myself and the kids and yes, also for eggs. However - the problem I'm trying to forsee is if I want to hatch out some of the eggs on occassion and sell them. I could care less about the color and purity, but if other people do then I might have a problem selling the offspring. I supppose that holds true for any of the breeds I'm interested in. So I'm trying hard to limit the amout of breeds I bring in and whatnot.

Also - NN's come in standard AND bantam sizes, right? I guess I'd strongly prefer standard size but wouldn't mind a couple bantam females just so that my small few other bantam chickens that I have don't get over-run by all the bigger ones I get. I'd like to have a "small group" of bantams.

Yes bantam and standard. btw it seems much harder to find show stock/standard bred in large fowl.

as for color, try sending out feelers about that? My own observation- seems color is not important to majority of interested persons but requests for birds matching the standard does pop up now and then. Having personality being good layers and heavy(for utility) seem to be hooks to newbies for NN. People often are impressed when I show them the egg sizes from my birds. even the bantams lay largish eggs for their size. Sometimes it seems like NN are regarded like Easter Eggers-don't really care what color they are as long as they lay colored eggs... don't care what color as long as they're quirky good layers. Am I wrong folks?

perhaps something like one group(one color?) bred to standard and a separate mixed color group of one-2 roos and whatever color hens?

Thank you that's what I feared. The rooster i had was supposed to be a hen. He was short and very wide with a bare sternum and thick legs and about 10 lbs which is why I'm thinking a cross. He was a dark blue with a huge bloody red band around his back just beautiful. I brought him to a show and my mom was feeding him and he jumped out of the cafe and attackedher, she needed stitches and made me sell him. Apparently a hawk got him. I'll call the feed store and see where they get their chicks. I have a gift certificate to cackle and I watched a video of their breeding stock noticed how many reds and buffs there was, a couple whites and blacks, I saw one blue

I know of one hatchery that sells them, but I won't type their name on a public forum and I wouldn't recommend them at all.

In agreement that the people who raise NN are more interested in untiled that for show and hence color is sometimes just a plus. And i have never seen a blue NN from a hatchery but I have noticed that hatcheries are starting to carry more BLRs in the Wyandotte breed. Also i have noticed that hatcheries are listing more breeds in the blue colors than they did in the past. I know this because I surf hatchery catalogs as much as garden catalogs. silly me
