It's usually pretty mild here too, so ???

I need to look at a USDA egg size chart, my girls may all be doing better than I give them credit for!NN x Silkie would give NN with normal feathers, as silky is a recessive trait. They would look similar to Kassaundra's hoodias except with variable leg feathering. There's pictures of silkie crosses here and elsewere on this forum.
USDA- 2 oz is Large size. Egg size is genetic and definitely needs selection if the size is not to be lost.. hatch from hens that consistently laid larger eggs and use roosters from large egg mothers. Easy to outcross to large egg breed as NN is dominant and easy to pure breed after the cross- especially if feather color and type isn't terribly important...![]()
Do you know how many chicks I'm going to try to hang on to?! I might be better off buying showgirls! Once you know what % your chick is, do you then refer to them as showgirls/NN/silkies, for selling the chicks or do you refer to them as NN/Silkie crosses? We don't have a lot of interest in our NN like I thought we would in this area and I'm afraid I might have a hard time selling the extras that aren't what I was going for. Would the ones that hatch w/regular feathers carry the gene and possibly pass down the traits I would be looking for or if they don't show the traits, they don't pass them down...the genetics in chickens is so hard for me to wrap my head around. To get the show girls, which are the NN w/ the silkied feathers (even boys are called show girls) You would have to take the first gen cross of the NN and silkie and breed back to silkie. That would give you a % of show girl, % of nn w/ regular feathers, % of silkies.![]()
Uh Oh! You are hooked : )

I was meaning that a certain % of the hatch will be each of those things. You will be able to see by feather and naked neck status if it is a show girl or not.
