Naked Neck/Turken Thread

This turken chick is huge! Is this normal for the breed? She isn't just big, she is heavy. I guess she could be a he, but either way,

She's 4 weeks old...

Maybe it's a rooster?

There are no tricks. Just cross the Naked Neck and Silkie. Take the Naked Neck chicks with the most 'Silkie characteristics' and cross them back to the nicest Silkies, and keep back crossing the Naked Neck Silkie chicks.
The second generation should have silkie feathering and from there on it is just a matter of selecting and backcrossing.

Thank you, I have LF Turkens, do I need bantams or will they cross ok? I have found that by F7, with luck they should be nice showgirls. I need to find some quality silkies.

I started with large fowl buff-ish Naked Necks and blue Silkies (both from Ideal hatchery) and made these. They were [(Naked Neck x Silkie) X Silkie] , so F2's? If you were using better quality Silkies to start with, the results would be better.
Unfortunately, that whole coop was cleaned out by a predator and I lost interest in Naked Neck Silkies : (

Sorry to hear that. My naked neck decided to go broody the other day and I have a 4-H demonstration coming up. I want to do a incubator vs. Broody hen type thing. What do you guys think?

Just thought I'd comment too that my turkens are the heaviest chicks in my brooder right now. I thought it would be the blue cochin but you can definitely feel the weight difference when you pick up a turken!

Okay, so I have a couple silly questions, as I am a first-time naked neck owner. Both my turkens are now 4 weeks. A couple of my laying hens (a BR and my RIR) already have a bare spot on the back of their heads, as well as pretty feather-torn backs due to our over-excited roo. How does a turken deal with this? Do your turkens get hurt much during mating or pecking order issues since they are so bare??
Next question, can they get sunburned?
Lastly, if their skin looks really dry, is there something I should put on it?

My 3 Turken pullets are very heavy as well. They feel very solid. As for the dry skin, try coconut oil, that is what I am using and it works very well.

My naked neck chicks are a little over 5 weeks old now. Is it too early to guess if they are boys or girls?

So far my guess is girls, but I am horrible at gender guessing on NN's, so reserve the right to change my mind at a later date.

Has anyone started their own showgirl flock with your turkens? I just purchased silkies and I want to try my hand at getting some showgirls from them. Any tips and tricks of the trade?

This is her son after breeding with silkie.

Breed this white silkie girl to the son and got 12 chicks; 4 were naked neck. 2 with black hard feathers and 2 are these two beauties

Sorry the pic is dark but they still like their heat lamp at night. I do need help naming them. 1 is a roo and the other a pullet.
