Naked Neck/Turken Thread

Don't you scare the life out of your chickens looking somewhat like the Pillsbury dough boy? if I wear a hat they think I'm an axe murderer of course they can think what they want this time of year it's too frigid to be with out one. 2* with wind chills of -20

I get lazy sometimes and fail to shave for about a month or so. On top of that, I have a 10 inch Napoleon goatee. When I get around to shaving (all but the goatee)...the birds act like I'm a coyote for a day or two, especially the young stock. They notice such things right away.

It's funny because it really looks like they pay us no mind but they must because they notice things like that so quickly.

My guess on gender remains the same. But still a guess.

I don't understand your questioning on the safety of moving the chicks? You say there is still heat, still indoor, what do you feel is going to be unsafe?

How ? never having hatched chicks or raising chickens B4. Hoz and When should I go about it ?

Should I enclose all 4 sides ? Will they Hang themselves on Bars ? What about Drafts ? Lighting ? what should the heat Temp under Light @ 3 weeks be ?
ALL new to us. etc etc

This is what we did with a large dog crate. lined the walls with a pizza box cut in half. Stops the draft and keeps the shavings in. as they got bigger moved the lamp to the top and adjusted the temp with lower wattage light bulbs. When they are big enough to see over the cardboard they don't stick their heads through.

So many variables...first and most importantly...calm down. Really lots of variables. If they aren't outside, and no doors or windows are open, I'd not worry about drafts. Hang themselves? Usually if they can get their scrawny necks through something, they can get back out.The only light they need is what is used to keep them warm. At this age, I have mine under two 250W infrared lights but I have relatively large brooders. In your case, I still like infrared and have one light high enough that one corner has a temp. of about 80 degrees at this age. I'd use the corner because that gives them room in what appears to be a relatively small cage/brooder and if 80 degrees is too warm, they can move away from the heat and there will be an area away from the heat for food/water containers.

Anything more specific, please ask...

And please, if anyone disagrees...SAY SO.

EDIT: I just saw Xovan's post...that could work very well too. I don't like having the light fixture inside the crate but it will work, if you chose to use small wattage. I like the infrared lights because in my opinion, it helps keep down picking but with two chicks...as opposed to as many as 200...

Still I don't see anything in Xovan's post that wouldn't work very nicely!

Ah..if you go with pizza boxes or other card board..make certain it is secured very well so the chicks can not fly upon it and manage to get behind it.

I would prefer the cardboard to be on the outside and use a separate piece on the bottom that is one piece and cut to fit the size of the brooder...and the cardboard on the walls should be at least 12 inches tall...more won't hurt.

Again...I do not brood two chicks..If someone sees where I'm wrong please say so!!!!!
