Hi Josh, I totally spaced trying this today... I will attempt it tomorrow and let you know. I think it'll be really interesting to try it out and see how many I get right... I will try the wing feather method as well... why not, right?!?! It'll be fun for my son too.

Hi! Here's a pic I found on my camera of barred / blue barred NN (they are 5 wks-ish old now and outside already).

Took some pics of others and still got to load them. Got some whackadoodle colors coming from my blue/splash Frizz NN pen and wondering why.

Cute babies! Those last two are partridges(eb or brown). Also look to be silvers so they'll be silver partridges.. Partridge is the most recessive base, so any other color such as black, red duckwing, birchen etc can carry that hidden.. also partridge is often "altered" by other genes to look not very partridge- gold and silver laced Wyandottes are partridges but you would never know it just by looking at them and not knowing what the genetics are(in their case it is added genes such as Pg, Co, Mi etc that turn the partridge patterning into lacing). Anyways, if you have partridges that don't look like it and are not pure for the genes that change their appearance, these can show up eventually.

Silkies have partridge, so if you had outcrossed to them in the past, there's your answer.

Thanks, I wish I liked them. They are supposed to be blue or splash.
Ah ha! Thanks Kev! They do have Silkie in their background, but I betcha I know where else it could have come from...
Those buff NN's from wayway back --- they are coming back to 'haunt' me.

Here are the newest barred NN's (a blue barred, a black, and a black barred) from 5/3.

I'm hoping to have a good showing from the NN's this week (and NO whackadoodle colors).
Got a splash (poss Frizz) NN chick and a blue (poss barred) NN chick out already.

I love that blue barred one!

I think most buff hatchery NN are on a wheaten base.. but that's a good question as most of them also have modifiers to make that buff body with colored tails.. will need to check out if that's possible on wheaten or partridge bases. Or both! I don't love that color pattern so never bothered to check the genetics for that.

If you really want to get rid of whackadoodles, write down the parents that throw them, because these chicks prove they are not pure for the black base.. both the father and mother. If you're really, really serious about 'purging' the stock, test mate each bird with a not-black or blue bird, such as a partridge, duckwing, or??, if the bird is not pure, then half of the chicks will come out whackadoodle and you can cull that bird out of the breeding program. A bit involved though!
