Naked Neck/Turken Thread

key west chick, I think that the lavander ameraucana is kissing her buddie. That is what I want it to look like anyway.

I hatched out bantam NN and bantam Ameraucans and they are best friends. When they were just over a week old, I brought home and impossible cross of MaransXsilkie chicks. Both chicks were just a few days old and immediately after putting them into a separate by close crate they squeezed through into the other crate. They were not going to be by themselves. And they all are fine together........a sweet group of chicks.

Congrats! What was the roosterly thing he did? By the way, one of his sisters laid an egg on Saturday.

He started putting his wing down, chasing one of the hens away from his preferred hen. Now he's crowing and making fertile eggs

I really like the contrast of the lavender and red.

Color of legs are due to pigments in skin, not much to do with turken necks once they're fully grown. Leg color is due to two main things- general skin color plus pigments in a specific layer of skin on the legs. Slate legs is from white skin plus the pigment in legs, yellow is from yellow skin plus a gene that says 'no pigments in this layer'(this gene is called Id) on the legs, etc.

Bowtie size is mainly due to pure for the naked neck gene vs not pure for naked neck gene. Not pure have much bigger bowties with lots more feathers(the 'wrap arounds' like you said are this) Your completely nakeds, one or 2 feathers and the high ones with few feathers on each side are the ones pure for naked neck genes.

If they also have different comb types, they can affect how the bow ties look, if they have pea, often it makes the bowties much smaller even if not pure for naked neck. Also there can be bit of a size difference between sexes, roo bowties usually look a little smaller than hen bowties.

Can you help me decide? I bought 7 Turkens who are now about 7 weeks old. They were supposed to be pullets, but I believe I have 4 roos and 3 pullets. I hadn't planned on keeping roos, but I really like these chicks and want to keep 1 roo! I do have a friend who will take any that I don't want (yes, they will be eaten) so I am trying to decide which one to keep. It is a toss up between two.

The first, is super friendly, calm and is definitely lower on the pecking order. He likes to sit on my lap. However, I am not excited about his color if I decide to hatch eggs from him.

The second one, is not as friendly, a little more aggressive toward the other chicks, but not bad and not at the top, but I LOVE his color, which is a plus if I decide to hatch eggs.

Here he is:

What are your thoughts? Pros & cons? Thanks!
Also, I am assuming that they are both roos because their combs are large (still light though) and their legs are huge! I am right aren't I? The other two roos have much brighter red combs, even though one is much smaller in size.

I am not sure if the first one is a boy.... would suggest waiting on that one.. it kind of seems it may molt out into a black tailed red.

Second one definitely is a boy. His feather color is also a clue(same reason I'm not sure the first one is a boy, not clearly showing male colors in pic), he's still growing and his color may change a bit.

I wouldn't worry much about the amount of nakedness, except if your goal is a pure breeding flock of naked necks. If the first one does turn out to be a boy, he still would produce some chicks as naked as the second one if bred with NN hens. The only real results, breeding wise between the two(if both boys) would be the second one would throw 100% NN chicks, no matter what he's bred with(even something like a barred rock), and breeding with NN hens, at least half of the chicks would be naked like him. That's because he happens to be pure for the naked neck gene, and the first one isn't(not pure- bigger bowtie). The only exception is second chick looks like he may be one of those totally smooth necks, born without any bowtie. Those are not too common, and sometimes it seems people ask around specifically for turkens like that. (bowtie or no bowtie, I love them all). If you prefer the no bowtie look, I'd suggest keeping him for that reason too.

Good luck with your pick and glad you like this breed!

Blue is one of those colors that doesn't 'breed true'. Blue bred with black as in your case is supposed to give half blacks and half blues. In your case, it's just pure luck most turned out blue.

BTW blue bred with blue= 1/4 black, 1/2 blue and 1/4 splash offspring. Splash is basically the 'pure' version of the blue gene. Example: splash bred with black= 100& blue offspring.

So it still could be that blue brahma's the father of the black one..

Thanks, Kev.I see the same thing with the Blue Partridge Brahmas who produce 50% Blue Partridge, 25% Splash and 25% Gold if mated due to the 'blue gene'.

I'll have a chat with Whitey...below....to get more blues with green eyes.
