Hey A KKH he want to use the trait of cold tolerance that the NNs has to breed into the modern game bird like Litl' Steve. He must not know Litl' Steve. I think everyone should have some NNs and mix them with other breed if they want to improve the other breed. Sure hope Missy Nava get lots of BLR/NN from her numero 7. No I don't know Litl' Steve. I tryed looking this person up with no success. Is he around on this thread much? I saw a picture once of a modern/NN and that got me wondering if the cold tolerance is better...

Little Steve is a modern game/NN cross who lives and thrives in cold climate. Although he is a he, he is not a person. tee hee
Where did you see the picture that you mentioned ?

Well, I have been reading a lot lately. I can't say for sure where I saw the picture. I was trying to find it again, so I could contact the person that posted the picture I saw. It was a barred NN/modern that I saw. The person posted it as a "guess what I am" on a thread....

Are you the breeder of Little Steve?

I have some modern eggs waiting to be incubated with NNs and cochins. I was thinking about the cross so I wouldn't have to worry about heat for the offspring. Would the first generation give a cold tolerant bird?

Hi homeschoolchick! Welcome to the NN thread

I purchased a little NN bantam lavender barred cockerel and a black hen from Kev. I named him Lil' Kev. I hatched out one of their eggs along with one from the Lil' Kev and an EE. One of those chicks is Lil' Steve.
As Lil' Steve grew I could see something gamey about him. Sure enough, Kev confirmed that he added the lavender gene to his stock through a little lavender bantam Modern Game. I am keeping Lil' Steve.
I gave Lil' Kev and Coco the hen to RHRancher as she wants to get into seriously breeding NN's. I live in the mountains where it gets quite cold. My coop is insulated, but they are outside in all weather by choice.

I don't know how far back the MG was introduced. Only Kev can answer that question.

edit to add: I have to have a first successful hatch and then wait until they are old enough to start the cross breeding ( UGGHH the wait! )

PLEASE stop posting pics. of adorable chicks.....you're making ME feel broody. I can't resist chicks.

KKH, a fair few of my NN crosses look 'gamey'.....not least of which my Gordon (NN X Brahma). Lil' Steve looks very gamey as a cockerel, and I'm guessing from his name that he's not a big guy.!

As I understand it (and my understanding is often flawed!), the NN originated in Asia maybe a thousand or so years ago.The Magalache (Madagascan Game Fowl) and the Ga Noi (Vietnamese Fighting Fowl) both are naked necked and large, with the NN being developed from cross between these two big and feather-challenged fraternity and a more conventionally feathered mutt type of chicken.

So our less- feathered friends have game ancestry, anyway.

Modern breed NNs have existed in Europe since the 17th Century and were described as coming from Transylvania in early poultry books (Which reminds me to call my next black NN roo Drac).

Well, that's as I understand the development of Naked Necks.
