Naked Neck/Turken Thread

Well now I know what they are.. I have been hatching chicks for awhile and doing well and when i decided to get naked necks I thought oh no.. The only problem I have noticed then can be a lil skidesh then eveyone else... in the pen...I had my daughter and her cousins trying to catch some of the babies one day out in the pen.. then did it for about 15 min... well the next day I came up with several of them dead.. I think because they were being chased and caught i think it stressed them out a lil to much.. It was a hard lesson for us to learn.. we lost alot of the pretty ones..
I went and got some more naked neck chicks today... They are so cute when they are so little

Nice bird, Flower.

I think you are being flattering to the postal worker who 'handled' that box.I would not have thought that he/she would have had a brain to injure.
Very sweet picture flower. Both you and pgpoultry really made me laugh out loud with your comments.

I got mine as day old chicks and handled them daily. I do have one that is a little on the skittish side, but all the others are calm. It would be best to teach the kids not to chase the chickens. It not only stresses them out, but can cause them to overheat. That may have been a bigger factor. You want to teach them to form a circle and slowly move in, or to move the chick(s) slowly into a corner blocking their escape. I'd put them in a smaller pen inside the big pen (or block a corner of the big pen) so that you can easily catch them and hold them each day. Just hold them in your hand, bring them close to your face and gently talk to them. I like to let them rest under my chin. Let it be a positive experience for them and they'll enjoy being handled. :)

I took all 10 outside for the first time at 10 weeks. These guys are so much more cold hardy than other chicks. They were down right HOT at 25 degrees Celsius!

I have a weakness for barring, but I love different colours.. I want to keep one rooster.. I have no idea how I'll decide! :barnie
So the barred are sex linked? Is that the first generation only or every generation thereafter? Keep the rooster with the most naked neck. Thanks for sharing!

Anyone have any experience with the Kuhl - Plastic Nest Pads - KNP-11-40

If I put hay or straw in the nesters my NN girls just throw it all over the ground.
They are BIG so it is a long drop to the bottom of the box. Several eggs get cracked, so they just
eat them. Shells and all! Good supply of calcium, but sucks for egg sales.

I tried some high density poly foam. Like a horse mat. It lasted about a week before they
tore that to shreds. I'm open for any input or suggestions.

As an after thought, Fleming Outdoors customer service sucks. As a BYC "featured sponsor"
E-mail is never answered and if you call on the phone you are put on hold and no one ever
answers.

Its almost TIME! My little babies (Not so little anymore) should be laying any day now! I have a row of nest boxes in there and I really need to go up in the attic and get some easter eggs and put them in there so they lay in the nest boxes and not on the floor!

I watched the NN's as they were in their run and they were crazy today! Chasing each other, flying into each other! I found who the dominant birds are! The Black Pullet and the Red Cockeral.

I never tried them but it looks like it could work? My girls love covered kitty litter pans. I use hay in them for the bottom to give more support for the big bottomed girls and then top it off with pine shavings. They can't throw all the bedding out of it because it is covered. I think they work great and the girls love using them.

Here is a pic of my long awaited naked neck X polish cross chick. I was disappointed with the results. But I will not give up, I have more eggs going into the incubator this week. The mama is my buff laced polish and the daddy is one of my 2 naked neck roosters. So here is a pic of my non naked neck ,naked neck X polish cross chick.

How old are they now? I think mine are a couple of weeks younger than yours. I'm anxious for them to start laying.
