How old are they now? I think mine are a couple of weeks younger than yours. I'm anxious for them to start laying.

Mine from the same batch are gorgeous and my black pullet was almost a bully when I added three younger pullets to their pen. Out of eight I have only four left. I gave four away,,,, mine are two splash and two BLRs and one of those is a beautiful splash BLR. I do not think that they will be laying for another month and will not have a rooster until early nex year.

birdmaniac Your silkie NN needs a NN rooster. If she did have a nn she would have some offsprings with nn but not all. Since she did not inherit the gene (she would be nn if she did) You know genes come in pairs and the birds with no feather on their necks or very samll amount have two copies while the birds with big bow ties have only one copy. NN roosters in general are more quiet than other roosters and not ususally very agressive.

If I put hay or straw in the nesters my NN girls just throw it all over the ground.
They are BIG so it is a long drop to the bottom of the box. Several eggs get cracked, so they just
eat them. Shells and all! Good supply of calcium, but sucks for egg sales.

I tried some high density poly foam. Like a horse mat. It lasted about a week before they
tore that to shreds. I'm open for any input or suggestions.

As an after thought, Fleming Outdoors customer service sucks. As a BYC "featured sponsor"
E-mail is never answered and if you call on the phone you are put on hold and no one ever
answers.

Good morning If you search plastic nest pad you'll find a number of people that use it. also if you google it you can find it cheaper

Are you asking in numbers of years or during the laying season?

Mine usually are year around layers although they do take their usual molting time off. I have some that lay every day and some that lay every other day.
I've kept hens up to 5 years and they will still lay the occainal egg, but I usually only keep them now until about their third season of laying,, then during that last season of laying hatch out the babies to keep my new layers.

This all applies to my Easter Eggers also.

I am currently looking at adding some chickens to my backyard flock. Right now I will be adding on Buff Orpingtons and one other one. I do not want any hybrids because if I like the breed- I'd like to be able to breed them to increase my flock. I really like the appearance of the NN and am leaning towards adding this one. (I only want 2 breeds right now. I contemplated 3 but I think 2 is better) BO are known for the heaviness and they cannot easily "fly" over fences. I'd like another bird that won't be an issue getting over a 4/5ft fence. Thanks for your input!

I have an Ameracauna that would fly over the new 4 foot fence I had installed basically to keep all the passersby from stopping and gawking.Rather comical she would fly over and literally knock on the back door with her beak. Then she taught my Marans to do it. I clipped one of her wings and she hasn't done it since. NN's are a great breed and definitely make for a lengthy conversation when you have company over.
