Naked Neck/Turken Thread

Jackie O isn't just a pretty face w/ big hair, she caught a frog today. I would rather she hunted rodents. And Miss Priss laid an egg already. I just got them Sat afternoon.

Are they bantam sized? They don't look very big when you're holding them.
No they aren't bantam, but they aren't big girls. Their mother is a spitzhauben, so I think there size reflects that more then the NN father. I love the top hats and the color and am hoping I can increase the size of the offspring and keep the top hats and of course the NN.

Very much so. COmb right now says pullet, but I wouldn't get my hope up to high.
I've noticed on NN's that many pullets tend to look like roos when babies, and vice versa.

There are several genes involved in leg feathering, some dominant some recessive. There is a gene that actively repress leg feathering, IIRC. So there's bound to be some 'surprises' by crossing feather leg to some breeds like above. The 'usual genetic answer' is to expect relatively sparse leg feathering out of feather leg to clean leg cross, so your NN cross is more the expected 'result'- although the amount does vary bird to bird. NN doesn't have much effect on leg feathering as far as I know/experienced(check out leg feathering on showgirls in particular). If your LaFleche crosses have very heavy leg feathering, that's rather atypical but not impossible due to a bunch of genes involved for this trait.

All of my NN X Brahma have inherited the Brahma pea comb......so IT is dominant over the single NN comb.
The La Flèche comb is now interesting me as all my Brahmas have the pea comb. but the comb on the crosses between NN and La Flèche are like a little crown....two single ridges fused at both ends. That seems odd....the La Flèche comb effect has split the comb into two....but why has the pea comb become single?

The thing about La Fleche combs is they have an extra gene(s) affecting their comb. Brahma x NN is a really simple pea comb x single comb cross. Brahma x La Fleche is a simple pea comb crossed with single comb plus duplex(and possibly also extra genes unknown to me).

The brahma x LF combs very likely are pea, but look 'strange' due to those other genes in play here also. Pea comb appearence can be altered to some extent- either to showing obvious ridges with spike like bumps or down to merely a bump-less single ridge. I don't know what's involved with those. My guess is the LF combs may have extra genes that help modify their combs into that horn shape.. so by outcrossing, the non-purity of those modifier genes may be causing all those odd appearences on what is otherwise supposed to look like a double pea comb.

I think the duplex comb basically makes a double comb, so you are seeing two pea combs with prominent 'spikes' making them look like double singles. To my understanding LF combs are double combs but also bred to lose the double single comb appearence down to two blades with no spikes.

Anyways to test your theory, a great way would be crossing those birds with a regular single comb and see what comb types the chicks have. If some turn out with normal pea combs, that would be your proof those weird combs really are pea, despite their single comb appearence.

Sorry I am rambling and I should probably post this latter part on the La Flèche thread.
One of my Brahmas is currently incubating two eggs from my over-sized NN Blackchops (who usually lays double yolkers) and both are showing good embryos at 12 days....My Brahma X NN Gordon will probably be the father. I DO hope they hatch.
Me too, but perhaps it's a good thing there's a sea between us in case those turn out into people-eating giants....

Flower, you wanted to ask a genetics Q?

How sure was the seller the mother was a spitzhauben? or did the NN parent have a crest?
