Name for unknown breed of chicken! Very much open to suggestions!

I thought it was females that get the spot since male chicks looks are controlled by the mother's genes.

The spot appears on the males and indicates the presence of the barring gene which; yes, they got from their mother.

You've got it backwards. The hen has to be barred to produce black sexlinks. Barred males pass barring to all offspring where as barred females only pass it on to their sons.
