I am trying to explain to hubby what we can use to fortify the staples we used to secure our hardware cloth and I can't remember what they are called..the screws?

Plain wood screws with fender washers. Good for you for taking security measures.
We have a trail cam and never see anything but the occasional bunny bit this morning hubby spotted an opossum in the back yard..not taking any chances! I keep the pop door open as the pen is ,"fort knox" as my hubby calls it but I would feel better securing the hardware cloth

I use deck screws, they're coated for weather resistance

Fender washer on bottom, standard on top for reference. The screw between is a coated deck (2 1/2" shown, 1 5/8" recommend for wire)
ETA: when you buy fender washers look for 3/16" hole they work best. You can use 1/4" with deck or drywall screws. Anything larger and the screw runs through the hole and won't hold
