thanks for the answers, i don't agree with fighting that's for sure but i was wanting some eggs out of them. maybe a larger coop in the future with some laying breed birds.

It's the same as most ornamental birds. I have a pair of Sebright. Supposedly, they lay 80 on average. That's very poor compared to the 230 of the Friesian! But they're adorable, full of character, fun, friendly, fantastic, funny, and lots of other words beginning with 'f'.

The roo looks like a Cubalaya. I have one who is super sweet and protective with his hens. He has never been mean to my kids or I but will defend his girls against other roos pretty aggressively. Very hardy and good foragers.

By the looks of them, they are probably about a year old. They do lay less eggs in the cooler weather, but will lay some. You might try worming them, it's a good time of year for that. Also with what was said earlier, they are sensitive to change and may have to settle down in their new home. Keep them, you'll like them.

Just want to add - OEG's do not have pea combs. That rooster does

OEG's were not bred for fighting either.

He's not a Cubalaya either, probably an American Game mix. Same with the girls.


Games actually lay a LOT of eggs. The ones shown just aren't old enough though. When their combs are redder and bigger they'll lay.

ETA - they're under a year old. The girls don't even have combs yet, the boy hardly has much of spurs.

They almost certainly don't need a 100W heat lamp in Alabama! My chickens lived in a (bare) tree for two years in Atlanta and have never had frostbite or any other type of weather related problems. As you said they've been living on their own, they are definitely going to be OK until/unless it drops below ~10F. Save yourself some energy costs!!!

Sometime a little blood is normal. As long as it is just on the egg and not pouring out.
