I recently received an order of chicks from McMurray hatchery. They tossed in an unsexed "surprise" chick. It is absolutely killing me to wait MONTHS to figure out what breed and sex this chick might be.... Curse you McMurray! 😂

Here's a picture of the little dude/dudette. He/she is about 11 days old now. I've spent an obscene amount of time on McMurray's website comparing chick pics and trying to guess... Right now I'm thinking it is a Golden Wyandotte. Probably male since they always seem to have a lot of unsold roos....

Thoughts? Opinions?

You are right in that the “mystery chick”is usually a male but I one time got a female Australorp as my extra chick! I know the odds are against you but you never know.😊

The little fella is about 2 1/2 weeks old now. I can try to get a picture of him this weekend when he's closer to 3 weeks but I'm feeling like he's a Roo. I don't have any GLW pullets for comparison but this little chick is developing a fat comb. Can't really tell on the color yet but most hens usually have small, thin combs, right?

On a side note, this evening I was cleaning out their bins to put down new bedding. There was at least 1 Buff Orpington and 1 Australorp who came after my hands quite aggressively. Now, they are still little babies so they couldn't possibly hurt me but I did get a chuckle out of their bravery... Makes me wonder if they might be roos too....
