Naming chickens AFTER you get to know their personalities?

"Ladder" LOL

I have stuffed animals named Teddy (a dog), Duff (a bear) and Bean-Dip (a weird monkey thing).

Sometimes I have names picked out and sometimes I wait to have a look see at their personalities. That latter has generally turned out best. I know a lot of people have named their hens this, but I am still bound and determined to name on Camilla! (After the chicken on the muppet show.

Rhett&SarahsMom :

all ours are named after classic movie actresses. . . and Olivia could not be more of an Olivia if she were a human. . .

Okay, I have a confession. My chickens, which have never had any names beyond #1, #2, Greedy Chicken, and way back when, Goldie, were given names this time around. Or at least, 3 of them were.

Someone has an Australorp named Olympia and I thought that was a perfect name for an Australorp. Somehow, I was reminded of Olympia Dukakis. But, I couldn't just copy that. Wanting to stay with an "O" name, I chose Olivia for the little pullet that was always trying to get under my hand when she was tiny, who sometimes flies up and hangs on the wire net to look at me when I walk by, and who always wants to come out of the pen but then wants to go back in - always on her own, darn it!!

Now it looks like there's another BYC person with an Olivia (de Havilland?).

Still thinking "actresses" . . . I was intrigued by Spring Byington's name all those years ago. And, "Spring" just seems to go with a chicken . . . er, somehow

.

Finally, there's Edna May. Both Spring and Edna May are Barred Rocks. Spring likes to stroll around the yard and comment on everything. Edna May, well, I thought I had Edna May's personality figured out. She's probably the #1 chicken of this batch and likes to be wherever she likes to be. She's a big pullet and nobody else messes with her.

When I used to bring her out and put her in a cage on the lawn (before some of the pullets could be trusted to free range), Edna May would scratch around for a moment then promptly fall asleep. However, since I've allowed her to move freely about the backyard (other than Olivia who's one harem-scarem chick) Edna May is the one who's always on her way to do something. She absolutely seems to enjoy herself the mostest. Of course, she likes to assume responsibilities and today it was making sure the tree squirrel stayed on top the fence.

I've got 14 girls and one boy. Their names come to me. I just named one of the GLW's tonight, her name is Emily. Don't ask me why.

The rooster's name is Stumpy (he's a BO) only because they kept picking his tail feathers out, so he hasn't any tail at all now! Then there's Abigail, my friendliest BO, and Queenie, the big BO who I think is going to be top hen. Then there's Henny Penny, the golden Ameraucana, and Esmerelda, another Ameraucana. The third I haven't named yet, it just hasn't come to me. There are two other GLW's, the RIRs and the Barred Rocks. One of the BR's is Vivian, but I get confused between two of them which one I named. One of the RIRs is Rosey, but again, can't pin down which one it is

It'll settle down a bit when they get older, I think.

We name ours by group. We have 3 Isa's who are Mocha, Latte, and Cocoa. Daisy and duke are white rocks, batman and robin are banties, captain america, underdog, and superman are the EE's. Then there is darth (vader) who is a black silkie, with her buddy Yoda who is a white silkie. (See what happens when you let the kids name them?) The others are named dinner.

I name all mine as well but wait until they are a bit bigger and personalities show. One brown/red roo has been named soo many times but now i call him Charmin because he is sooo fuzzy and soft ya just want to squeeze him... I thought about Mr whipple but charmin sounded better. While they are small i call them all little bits. Still to this day if i go out with treats and they are hiding in the lilac bushes i yell out "little bits" and they all come running.

Mine get nick-names depending on the personality, like Drumstick, who we call "Stupid". Kip is "Angry Black Cock". Kendra is "Chicken Hawk" because of the way she perches on your arm. If we named them after a trait, they would all have the same name- Piggy.

I just got a bunch of new chickens, and been trying to come up with names for them. They are all bantams - oeg mostly.

I have an Atticus (speckled oeg - he just looked like an Atticus Finch to me), Jem and Scout (seramas), and a Boo Radley (oeg).

A bunch of BB Red oeg banty pullets - who all look alike to me, are named -

Beebee Ceecee Deedee Fifi Gigi and Keekee. Their roo has yet to get a name.

I have two serama hens Mini Pearl and Rosy and an oeg pullet named Lulu.

a white cochin banty roo named Hoss.

and a lot of large breeds with names like -
Chicken George, Oprah, Shug, Miss Celie, Old Biddy, Attila, Brunhilda, Freya, and Eunice, one silver laced wyandotte yet to be named, and one hen who is still (after a year) called "that other red hen".

The donkeys are -
Mojo, Juju, Mama, Nutter Butter, and Blackjack.
