Naming Chicks

We have seven assorted bread that were named randomly by all of the kiddos. For instance we have Butter who was bright yellow when we bought her but is now snowy white. Speckles who had dark red speckles on her head when we got her.
We do have 6 barred rocks though that we've named after creatures from Harry Potter:Hedwig, Buckbeak, Fawkes, Dobby, Firenze and Crookshanks.

One of my chickens to be will be Hedwig! I love it!

Some of our birds have names that we thought about, but most just came to us due to their appearance, or other attributes.
Sassy got her name because my husband put his arm over the gate into a group of adolescent chicks and scared one of them. Sassy hunted my husband down, jumped up and bit him on the arm (drawing blood) for scaring the other chickies.
Marsha-Lena started out as Lena for a leaning comb, but I started thinking it was lame and renamed her Marsha, but my husband couldn't seem to remember it, so it's now Marsha-Lena.
Skittles was always skittish.
Terra and Luna came home on Earth Day.
Buck was named as such because that's all he ever said until he started crowing.
Muffy has muffs.
Zippy put her head down and zipped around the brooder.
Dora is just a sweetie and so I just picked a cute, old-fashioned name.
Twiggy is just very cute, and earthy.

Of the new birds, only one has a name. A feed store employee gave us an EE chick with a slight cross beak because they did not want to cull it. It has grown out of the cross beak, and we named it Free Bird because it didn't cost us anything.

Just go with what makes sense to you and is easy to remember. I have a listing of names that I like that I may use for the new birds, but nothing has stuck yet. Naming them should be fun and nothing to stress about.

Mine was easy to name I just looked at there beaks and the names came to me I have 5 PBR and 1 RIR not sure if 2 PBR are males or not nor am I sure if the RIR is one but I will know when they crow or lay (lol) there names are.

Stripe (he was the meanest so it worked both ways Gremlin and the stripe across his beak)
Bertha (she was the biggest of them all)
Heckle (He has dang near all black beak)
Jeckle (she follows Heckle around and has mostly all black beak it is less then Heckle but not by much)
Peepers (she peeps alot always had she is also the runt but now she doesn't peep as much just when I feed them treats she peeps for me to pick them up)
and then there is my RIR named Red (he had an all red beak and it has never gone a way but now it is brownish)

And yes they do know their names they don't come running to me when I call but they do turn their head and look at me when I say there name only the one whos name I am saying will do this.

We have one gal that kept getting her tail feathers pecked and plucked so she was constantly covered in blu-kote. This made her look like she was messing her behind all day so we call her "Winnie" (the poo....lol). Other than that we just call them all by their traits....Fatty, Cubby Cheeks, Meanie, we call the Brahmas the "Mamas" because they watch out for the little guys. Let's see we also have Silkies we just call by color and my daughter does call one of the RIR chicks "GingerSnap".

I figure when they're grown it'll be much easier

I like sort of letting them name themselves - I started last year with 6 BOs and 5 Speckled Sussex. About half of them named themselves, half did not. When we lost a bunch to hawks I grieved for them all, but the named ones were hardest. As a result, I no longer make an effort to name them - but some persist in acquiring them.

Barbie - preened constantly, never a feather out of place. named at about 3 months old.
Thumbelina - runt and my favorite named at 2 days old
Samantha - (turned out to be Sam) named by the Post Office employee that kindly opened their box and unstuck the tape holding her(him) captive to another chick. named at 1 day old.
Dirty Bird - likes to go under the Jeeps and always comes out with oil or something on her back, named at about 14 weeks
Big Bird - because he IS. named at about 6 months old.
Mother - first one to lay, named at about 4 months
Little Chicken - smallest of the 3 hens left, named because she is the littlest and my DH enjoyed the play on Chicken Little - this one is calm and never has much to say, let alone that the sky is falling.

A friend of mine has
HENrietta
LAYah
CHICKita
and
RoBIRDa
but I am not that creative!

I've loved reading the names and stories here!
