Naps?

I must have lazy chickens. My barred rocks nap all the time.

Yep, all my animals like naps. I like naps too, I wish I could take one during the day. Nothing like a Sunday afternoon nap.

Does anybody else's chickens like to lay out in the sun?

I have a porcelain dutch that will run out to a sunny spot and then just collapse on her side with leg and wing stretched out...She is so funny.

I'm new to chickens, though I've had various other birds (raptors, waterfowl, parrot family, etc) off and on over the years. I know about dust baths and such and have seen other birds do it, but still freaked out when I first found one of my 2 wk old chicks writhing in the brooder box in her shavings (ok, I thought she was having a seizure LOL). I next freaked out when I moved them out to the coop and found one of them laying out belly to the floor near the door with her legs stretched behind her in classic "rubber chicken" pose and she didn't even move when I opened the coop door and spoke to her. She finally looked up as if to say "What?" and I realized she was napping. Now I notice that they all do that fairly frequently. they also lounge on their roosts even though it's the middle of the afternoon. It seems I learn something new every day- guess I shouldn't worry since one of my dogs and I have a penchant for napping on the couch in a sunspot in the middle of the afternoon whenever we can steal the time!

"My ducks love naps."

Our ducks are constantly napping - all day and ALL NIGHT! Wouldn't be so bad except that their coral is right outside our bedroom window.

Two of mine are barred rocks, the other two are dominiques (foundation stock of barred rocks). They all nap equally, usually in the shade

Our neighbor chicken sat for us when we went to the U.P. and asked us the next day, "Is it normal for them to lay down and stretch out? They were doing that alot." That week it was in the high 80s, so I think they were just trying to stay cool.

Every time I have chicks in the 8-10 week old range, they get a bad habit. The first to wake up absolutely has to walk ACROSS the others to get to the food or water.

I've seen this as well.
