Nasal Discharge, watery eye, Need Med Help - Good Update

Hope the Duramycin works better for you than it did for me. My Roo has been doing just what you describe, and the other 4 runny noses coughing etc. Yesterday was day 10 of Duramycin, 3 teaspoons to a gallon, fresh morning and early evening. Baby vitamins perked him up a bit, everyone else is normal energy and appetite, but no real change in symptoms. I got the Tylan injectible yesterday (Jeffers Livestock around $9, shipping $5 if order under $50,) going to try to build them back up with the probio's vitamins and such for 3 days, then use the Tylan.

Good Luck!

threehorses - I should have specified that I am not actually reapplying the DE frequently I am just turning the straw around so as to get the poop off the surface. I only put a little DE in after I clean the whole coop out.

Mandy 1296 - Let me know if you think the Tylan works better for you.

As a general update I am not sure if she is really getting better or not, I hope she is!

I have rinsed the eye out and will continue to do that and hope that it is helping. I have been using 1 tsp per 1/2 gallon of water for the Duramycin for two and a half days but may up it a little.

She is definitely opening her eye a lot more and it does not look so bad when it is open. She is more active and eating but still doesn't act quite normal; but on the same token it is over 100* here the last two days and so none of the chickens are acting that great. They are hot! She is not as active as she should be though and I know is still not feeling well.

She isn't walking funny or 'drunkenly' or anything like that though and perches well.

There was still a little nasal discharge yesterday but not very much. And her poops continue to be very normal and not runny at all which is encouraging to me at least.

I am very happy to say that the other chickens still seem totally fine all be it hot, as I was and still am worried that they will show up with something now.

Oh, my bad on the misunderstanding the DE application. /blush

On the duramycin, do you have access to Aureomycin there as well? Also since the Duramycin is usually a 14 day treatment, it may take longer for you to see results if the Duramycin (alone) will work for her. But this is good that she's opening her eye more - thanks to your hard work. Eating and more active = good.

How about things like vitamin supplementation - anything like that going on? Are you able to clean out her nares, get them flushed out a bit? And great on the poop - that's always a good sign and a nice relief from all the other matters.

And don't let yourself worry too much. And be sure to take care of yourself in the heat as well, ya know. (That's the mother hen in me kicking in.)

Please do continue to update if you don't mind.

Everything is about the same here with our chicken Rook...she is eating well and getting her meds, vitamins and electrolytes. Going to wash out her eye again and continuing to hope that she is on the mend. No steps backwards so that is good.

Everyone, animals, plants, humans, is so glad it is a little cooler today! I was spraying everything, animals included, down with water the last couple days and my daughter actually got heat rash and a temperature from the heat. Thankfully she woke up today rash and fever free!

Great update today...

Rook is doing so much better and I would say today is the first day she is acting like a normal chicken again.

She is keeping her eye open almost all the time and this morning really fought with me to get the ointment in her eye. She pecked around at the ground for scratch and was excited about the avocado I gave her! And she is vocalizing with the other chickens which she has not done at all since getting sick.

I am going to start reintegrating her with the other girls by putting the cage she is in into the normal run area and letting her roost at night with the others.

Hopefully all will continue to go well...she is not 100% yet but I am confident she will be soon!

That's wonderful news!! Keep up the good work, and please let us know how she does.

Happy to let everyone know that all is now well in our chicken world.

Rook is all better and is now back with the other girls. It took a bit to get them back peacefully but we went slow over the last two days and they are now doing great. They were laying together this evening and are now all in the coop perched together.

I am very happy and thank everyone for the support and info!

Now THAT is a wonderful sight to see, I'm sure. Congrats on all your hard work with those guys! Thank you for letting us all know.
