NASTY AUCTIONS!!!!

I went last week to the big flea market around here and ended up buying 2 hens off this very rough handling man..he actually hurt both hens i bought just trying to get them outta the cage! I was soo mad! one of them got a sprained leg and it swelled up alot and truned blue for a few days but shes doing better now. The other one got her wing hurt and wont even jump up into the nesting boxes or lay an egg..i feel bad for them they must be stressed..
any way...that same weekend i went to an auction to try to buy more nesting boxes which i did get...and i saw this same man there. i knew him as soon as i saw him (jerk) i wanted to say something to him but i kept my mouth shut cuz i know how i can get. he was buying at this auction and getting tons of hens for like 4 bucks ...ahhgg...i didnt want him to have them but i couldnt buy them all...then it hit me too that i paid him $10.00 for each hen and he was buying them WAAYYYY cheaper than that and treating them badly.
So that wasent a good day for me coming to the realization just how rough and nasty the animal auctions are. I already knew they were but just seeing it again hurts my heart, makes me sick. they were all just throwing these animals around banging them in the boxes by throwing them on the ground. it was just awaul!! they were selling tons of rabbitts too and were just soo rough with them..the didnt care attitude and stuff...just sickening...i will never go again

Sounds like he didnt care about the animals at all, just out to make a buck.

I wondered if it was just our auction that treated the animals like that, but guess not!

We started going there last year and the first few times, I was livid by the time we left. The way they treat animals borders on cruelty for sure. Since then we have seen numerous animals dropped, feathers ripped out, hens flying out of boxes and crashing into walls and whatnot, boxes/crates being dropped, birds shoved back into small holes with their wings often still sticking out while they close up the box, even boxes crushing in the box below it and 10 people walk by and just leave it like that for hours (the poor chickens or underneath must be miserable). Also they are dumb enough to sell stupid stuff first, like eggs, plants, food and wait for hours to sell the animals. So whether its Winter and the animals/chicks are freezing or its 90 and they are close to dying from the heat, they just don't seem to notice or care. Evidently the brain cells of the people in charge are not very numerous!

I totally don't understand their practices either. If they damage the animal, kill it or let it escape, then they don't make money either. If they keep upsetting people, then noone will be there to sell stuff to. They handle so many animals their whole lives, it should make them appreciate them more, not treat them like lumps of clay with no feelings. Not to mention it makes them look like ignorant losers with no patience or compassion.

We had friends stop by to see the auction one night, they never came back. The girlfriend was so ticked off she started running her mouth to a couple of the guys working there and her bf had to drag her to the car lol.

I just try to not focus on the old farmers with no hearts and know the animals I am buying get to come home to a nice, safe, kind life.

There are a few auctions I will not attend. These boys just do not understand that birds have emotions and they feel pain.

Unfortunately, many believe that the chicken is unworthy of any kind of respect.

Exactly i totally agree with you! they do look like stupid ignorant loosers!!! See at first i thought well hes retired and trying to make money so ill buy a couple hens but after that i just couldnt believe how he was and i have no compassion for him..and i like the girl you mentioned that ran her mouth wanted to soo bad but if i started i wouldnt stop so i just didnt start...One of the hens the one that wont even fly up to her nesting box she wont even lay an egg! she does eat and drink but she waits untill everyone else gets outta the way..im glad that my 2 new hens will live here in peace untill they pass..

the auction we went to was like an hour away west..i think it was knoll town or someting i cant remember relly..ill remember later when im not thinking so hard about it..LOL

That's exactly why I ended up with 6 ducklings as opposed to 3, I just couldn't bare to leave the other 3 behind, not only was he really rough with them, he had them in a storage shed in a cage they could stick parts of their bodies out of. He also said he has so many animals that he fed them whatever. When I asked him if he fed them medicated chick feed? he said sure, whatever I have,..I said can't they die from that?? and what about angel wings?? he said oh when their wings go up, he shrugged his shoulders and that was that. He also told me if I was smart I would only give them a cap of water. Crazy, my ducks would consume that in under 2 seconds, come to think of it there was no food and water in their cage when I arrived!
Feel good knowing you have given some chicks a better life. Although the good thing here is he sells them quickly, so they endure him for only a short time.

Just remember guys, when you get animals from these types of situations you risk bringing some real nasty stuff (diseases, illnesses, lice/mites/parasites) home to the rest of your flock. A person that doesn't have any compassion for the animal and doesn't care to treat it humanely probably isn't worrying too much about taking sick birds to a sale, either.

You should quarantine birds regardless, but especially if you've brought a bird home from an auction or a less-than-desirable situation. And keep them separated for a long time--at least a month.

Some things are fairly easy to treat (like mites), but you could bring home something that could literally wipe out your entire flock.

It is sad that some people can't have just a bit of respect for animals. Even if you are just in it to make a buck (which I don't agree with, but whatever), you can treat animals decently. There is no excuse. Minifarmgurl, those hens are very lucky that you found them!

The folks who handle birds that way also don't give a flying fig about their health. I would NEVER buy from any auction, period. Too dangerous!

I heard some men talking in a store one day. They were taking their cows to the auction because they found that they were sick and wanted to get rid of them before it was too obvious. I'm sure this happens with birds as well. Please be careful at these auctions.
