nasty smell- I think it's infected

I think the wound on Ghandi's back is infected. Its not red or swollen, but it smells terrible. I've got him on teramyacin and I've been treating the wound nightly with Furacoat (sp), but when I got him out last night to dress the wound, it was full of drainagey looking stuff. Its not pus, but what looks like dilute blood that's off in color. He's eating and drinking, and I gave him some yoghurt last nught that he ate a few bites of. Otherwise he just stands there. Doesn't lay down, doesn't move. Just stands there. :cry: what should the next step be?

Did you rinse it out with saline solution? That would help you to see more of what's going on. I would do that...put a dressing on it and get her on Tylan 50 injections....that's just what I would do if it were my hen and from what I learned here over the past few months. Good luck! I sure hope she is ok.

Wounds need to be clean up everyday. I would boil a quart of water with a tsp. of salt and let it cool. Use it to clean the wound until you can't see any drainage and all the ick is gone. Furazone is good, but it does tend to dry wounds. They heal better when not too dry. My personal favorite is granulex V. It contains enzymes to eat dead tissue and keeps the wound from getting to dry and icky. It also make cleaning it easier.

So since the wound is so very very deep, should I just put him in the sink and pour the water over his back? I'm worried that he might catch a chill and get sick (er). He just looks like he's in so much pain, i don't want to make it worse

I'll boil up some saline this evening, and get him washed down. i'm terrified to give injections.. is that something that I could do at home?

I just talked to a vet that treats chickens, and she said that if it's starting to smell, then it's not good

I'll get him cleaned out when i get home, and hope for the best. I can't lose him now.

Here's two different reciepe to help him with the pain.
The usual dosage recommended on BYC is 5 regular (325 mg) aspirin (NO SUBSTITUTES) crushed and mixed with ONE GALLON of water.

Baby aspirin that is truly just aspirin is fine. Just make sure it's not any kind of aspirin substitute. A baby aspirin is 81mg and crushed in a cup of water is about the same strength as five 325 mg regular aspirins in a gallon of water. Gave the smaller batch equivalent since it's one bird and gallon batches are more than what's needed. As you are already doing, wait till the bleeding problem subsides.........

If the wound is deep, do you have a large syringe? I would take a syringe (turkey baster may work) and use that to spray the saline solution in.

I wonder if putting terrimycin powder on it would help? I've done that with cattle and I know Speckledhen is using a drug in the same family for Zane. You would need to put a gauze pad over it and then wrap it somehow. Terrimycin is labeled for chicken too.

Ok, luckily I found a vet that will see him. Tomorrow morning, 10:30. Keep your fingers crossed for me.
