I have a Sussex rooster that I got from the RSPCA early this year he was 9 months he has always been scared type of rooster even when I picked him up. He is over a year old now and is nasty to the hens and does not wait until they eat first not a gentleman at all. I have 3 punture holes in my leg today after he attacked me. He has a go at the hens first then attacks me from behind when I am feeding them. I am scared of him and sad

Hello and welcome to BYC! It's unfortunate that he turned out this way. You did what a lot of people won't do, adopt from a shelter. It's kinda like getting a dog from the pound, you never know what they have been through. Looks like your going to have to get rid of him as you just can't trust him anymore. I hope everything works out for you. :)
I have a couple I have to get rid of too, not because their mean but because I have to many. One is only 3 months.:(

Thanks I never new roosters could be so nasty I only had one before this one and he was lovely so this is a bit of a shock. Too bad you are on the other side of the world I would take one of the roosters. I have problem with carpet snakes in summer had to snake proof the pen. They liked the smaller chickens so I like to get them in the cooler months.

I never heard of carpet snakes, what do they do with the chickens? There are always a lot of people looking to give away free Roos not because their mean but because they have to many. Maybe you could get one like that! :)

They eat them at least no mess I usually find them with a big lump in their belly it was the worst summer for them this year, very dry weather.

Welcome to BYC!

Yes, you need to get rid of that roo. They should not be mean to you OR the hens. So try to find yourself a friendly boy.

Holy Crow!! That is a big snake!! Snake are scary. Especially when they can get in and eat chicks and eggs. Good luck keeping these slithering critters out of the coop.

Enjoy your flock and good luck finding a nice rooster!

'Carpet snake' is just a blanket term referring to pythons of a few different types.

It's a fallacy that they won't jump, won't attack without provocation, and won't kill when they're not hungry. They will do all of those things.

I think the 'snakes can't jump' myth is based on people who were only familiar with cold snakes, I've seen both venomous and nonvenomous snakes jump, just double their bodies and launch entirely off the ground towards you, not the usual striking where the lower half or 2/3rds stays on the ground. They also don't mind flopping down onto you from above.

I think they kill when not hungry to protect themselves, as they naturally target prey's lairs and will even wait a whole year to have the prey occupy their breeding lair again... So when they're full, it makes sense that they need to kill any more animals approaching or attacking them so they can then rest and digest in peace.

The nastiest pythons are generally hot ones around 6 foot, the larger ones are generally calmer. I've caught hundreds of them over the years, only lost a few chooks to them though... I have a sort of feel for a 'python night', lol... It's a certain kind of humidity and weather, and they usually show up between 9pm and 2am. Sometimes there have been two or three per night. Sometimes they come back, since we only relocate them. Once or twice I've had some nasty experiences where I've dropped the torch and the snake has decided to harass me out of the coop, lol! But generally they are nice animals to deal with.

Hello and

I take it you are a fellow Aussie? :D

Queensland or close to it, I'm guessing?

Sorry about your rescue being so ungrateful, sounds like he's making life misery for both you and the hens. Roosters like him kill toddlers, they're better off being made into dinner rather than being bred on.

Best wishes with your flock.

That is a beautiful snake, but wow, not the kind of critter I'd want hanging around my hen house. There is an article on snakes and protecting your flock in the Learning Center, under the Predators and Pests section, as well as an article on dealing with bad roosters. Best of luck!
