I'm so sorry. This is from someone who just sat, not 15 minutes ago, with a Barred Rock rooster in my lap in the livingroom, his eyes closed and his neck stretched out over my arm while I rubbed between his wattles. I know how awful it feels to have to let them go and how it feels when they go unexpectedly.

If it was indeed bumblefoot (staph infection of the foot) that your pretty roo suffered from, and your sister's chicken (nearby?) also suffered from it, could it be that the chickens are coming across something that is cutting or worrying their feet? Looks like you are out west: could they be getting into cactus bits, or mesquite thorns, or any other pointy things that might make small cuts in bare feet and open them to infection? I know it can also simply be caused from various types of trauma (like hard landings) in heavy breeds, but it's just a thought ~ hope you don't ever have to go through that again.

Jenski....I hadn't thought of them stepping on little stickers or cactus before. We don't have cactus on our land but we do have some little weeds that can sure jab some feet pretty bad. I'll have to see what i can do about those.

I thought I was ok about his passing until I read all your posts and now here I sit crying again. I miss that gentle little bugger. I had to have my puppy put down last night and maybe my other pup in the next few days.
