My DH is half Mohawk- and so our children are 1/4.

This thread has started me looking into my family tree again--Oh What a mess!! Is there really any free uncomplicated sites out there? I have never seen such a maze of confusion. It's kinda fun and exciting too BUT can make you wanna pull your hair out also.

Myheritage.com is free up until I think 800+ people. But you can have more than one tree, and a website for each. They e-mail you when a relatives tree matches yours. They are also very multicultural, every nation you could think of. USGENWEB is really good too. You can go to each state individually w/ links to lots more. I found Revolutionary and Civil War documents that way. Keep the faith, it can be frustrating, but the rewards passed on to future generations is so important. The legacy we leave them; knowing wher they come from and how we are all connected is immeasurable.
P.S. Also try researching the tribe your people come from. Back in the day I wrote (by hand) all14 recognized bands of Apache and both divisions of Cherokee. Came up with bupkiss!

They may have said Cherokee because it is the most familiar. I have nothing concrete yet . Both my g grandfather and his wife , my g grandmother have Irish surnames - Cudd and Bettie, but From the pictures I've seen when they were young and knowing them while I was growing up. They didn't look very Irish to me lol.

One of my Great uncles had ten kids-- When I went to the Otoe? Indian reservation years ago , A lot of those people looked a lot like my cousins, facial features, body type etc. Of course , that could be superficial similarity . Who Knows?

I have always had a nagging need to know where my people came from, just wish I was richer or smarter so I could find out a little faster lol ---Wayne

(And if your wondering what im saying, chippewa, ottawa, seneca, cherokee, and Mohegan all ereginated from Michigan, same with Dakota but I see its not listed yet)
 
I don't know your spiritual beliefs, but I pray alot. When I was growing up with Auburn hair, green eyes and fair skin, I was called a liar if I said I was Indian. My bone structure is very Native just not my coloring. My children's 2 fathers are mixed bloods and all my children look more Indian than I.I would cry every time I heard about the Cherokee removal, like something was speaking to my soul. Listen to your heart it will lead you. I can't be registered, but I did find ancestors who moved in the very 1st wave of Cherokee settlers leaving NC in the late 1700's. The rest left at the time of the Old Settlers. One grandfather is named Ulysses in some records and Wyssue in others. When you look at that side of my family they look so old Cherokee. I also get the "every white person says their Cherokee" garbage.John Ross was 1/8 Cherokee, more white boy than not.But his heart said Cherokee.

Not knowing specifics about my heritage has nagged at me for years . I've just always encountered brick walls when it comes to finding out specific details.

Also I have had a couple of incidents in my life where I felt like I was transported back in time ( just for a few seconds) . One Time I was riding our old spotted half hand pony bareback back in the fields and the woods . I rode up on a hill and the wind was blowing through my hair and just for a few seconds I was somebody else , somewhere else, But everything was so familiar. I know that sounds kind of crazy , but I really don't know how to express it in words. It wasn't like Dejavue It was like a spiritual moment. Maybe it was one of those past lives things. Has anybody had anything like that happen before. Maybe somebody could express it better in words than me. --Thanks Wayne

Wayne you explained it just fine. And you are right most people don't understand that Native Americans have many tribes that go by many names and each with their own cultures. They pick the one they heard most.
