Naturally Worming Chickens

The seeds are where the natural worming comes in, plus have always been told cayenne pepper is to kick start hens to lay.

oh boy i have a listless blue andalusian hen and her big floppy comb is getting dark purple starting at the tips...she was craning her neck and opening her mouth a lot last week but that seemed to stop only i heard its a sign of worms.  she is acting so dopey.  moving real slow.  feed store said prolly is worms so i used something they have there not even thinking. Wazine 17 (piperazine base). is that bad?  a vet said its ok to eat the eggs after using that stuff...but definitely not antibiotics.  If i wasn't in such a panic that she was about to die i would have come here first to research.  I isolated her but i'm put the meds in all the hens' water anyway just tonight. ugh!!!

Piperazine only works on some worms. I know, because I wormed my chickens TWICE with it and it didn't work. The package I have says it's fine to eat the eggs etc without a waiting period.

Yeah, that's what I've been reading. Makes one wonder, though, if the active compound in the seeds might also be present in the fruit, if only in very diluted proportions. At any rate, pumpkins are loaded with all kinds of good stuff so maybe I'll start getting some eggs? :fl

Okay, so I did cayenne-coated feed twice on day one and once daily for two more days. No solid conclusion. I'm still seeing worms but I'm no longer seeing moving ones. Now, whether it worked and the worms are dead before being expelled or if I'm looking at their droppings after the worms have died from exposure to the outside, I can't say. IF I manage to catch a wormy chicken "in the act" to examine the worms immediately upon exit, then I can be certain and will post conclusion. I CAN say, however, that it does absolutely NOTHING in the way of kick-starting egg laying.

Worms cannot survive outside the host...chemically nor naturally.

I've been to this thread before and not sure if anyone here tried Molly's Herbals yet? Well, I did and IT WORKS! (Link above.) Best part is, no wasted eggs and the wormwood flavour doesn't transfer to the eggs, either!

So two questions. If you went and used this does that mean you were not successful treating with the other things mentioned in this thread? Would be nice to get a divinities yes or no the chilli didn't work.

And secondly, so you have a wormwood bases supplement and that cured it. I was planning to plant some but hadn't been able to track any down. I had read however its best not to give them too much as it can be bad for them somewhere I'm sure. I'm curious how much you had to give them. I'm also curious how you know they are now cured? Is it just because you have only seen dead worms?

Have to just add all these natural remedies sound great but it would be nice to find some proof any of them actually work and are not just old wives tales that the Internet is keeping alive :)

The piperazine only works on one type of worm and all the other chemical crap I can't find. The cayenne did not work and the other herbs that I've found that are said to work I couldn't find.

Yes, wormwood in high doses is bad news - just look at Van Gogh and a few other historically famous people that killed themselves from too much absinthe. There are many varieties of wormwood, though, each with different traits and potencies. In fact, it was named precisely for it's effects as a wormer! (We didn't always have modern chemicals with which to cure ourselves, lol).

Anyway, after the first dose I noticed worms being pooped out left right and centre from chickens that I thought were worm-free. A few hours ago, one pooped right in front of me and the worms were DOA when - normally - they wriggle around for a good twenty minutes/half hour.

The lady that makes this stuff has spent years working out her formulas and dosages with her own animals prior to making her product available to others. She has a lot of good reviews, I think one of them quotes before-and-after fecal testing (which I think I read was part of her process in coming up with the correct ratios and dosing).

Omg I just wrote a whole big thing and it disappeared when I hit "submit"! I can't wait til this site is mobile-friendly.

K, not writing it all again, gonna be brief: check out her site/history/testimonies. I believe before-and-after fecal tests are mentioned somewhere as proof of her formula's efficacy.

Yes, wormwood is potentially dangerous. However, it got its name because people who drank the tea or whatever expelled worms. Wiki.

My chickens pooping lots of worms when only one ever did before medicating. The poop that was pooped right in front of me this afternoon had not a single living worm when normally they wriggle around for a good twenty minutes/half hour after expulsion.
