Naughty Randal

Yes! That's what I would do. Let us know how they do! We love pictures! And you're very welcome :D

Yes, sorry! I meant after randal is gone, integrate the 10 weekers to my flock while the new roo is in quarantine by himself for a few weeks. That way the new babies are in with the hens for a few weeks before the new roo arrives. Thank you for the info!

Sounds like a good plan!

oddly enough "Randal" is the chicken in my profile pic; this makes me sad! I've culled other roosters but this one was my fav. Is there any hope of a rooster actually being good with kids? And there's no rehab for this behavior? I don't want to risk my child getting seriously injured as he doesn't even has spurs yet; and when he does that will be super terrifying.

Sorry so many questions; how do I tell which hens to put with them? I am around them consistently but Randal seems to be in charge, hard to tell pecking order of the hens. there are 2 of the hens that seem to really want to be bullies towards them; not sure if that means they are lower or higher in the established flock. Also, thank you for the advice; I will try another roo in the spring perhaps. My chickens free range during the day, without a roo are they more in danger of predators then? We have fox in the area and lost one in the spring (under Randal's watch lol) Thank you again!!
I had a head hen get to big for her britches, and removed her from the flock for three days, she was in the porch and went nuts wanting out, during that time the other hens settled into a quieter routine. when I put her back, she was still the head hen, but it had knocked her down a few notches and she has been good for the most part

So I put the big dog crate in the run this morning in the corner so it is protected on two sides and places my 10 week old Brahmas in there so they can "see but not touch" for a week or so. Well Randal (who is going to his new home this weekend) managed to grab one and pull her head and neck through the bars. I got to them before he did any damage and he ran out of the run. Now all the ladies are inside the run/coop with babies in the crate and he is outside. I cannot catch him because I think he knows if I can he's going to freezer camp at this point. Apart from whacking him with something I can't get him right now. I don't even want to give him away now! This escalated so quickly from a nice roo to a little monster! These babies have been free ranging next to them every day for over a month now, only separated by a fence! I can't keep the new hens in my basement forever but now the poor things are absolutely terrified!

Can you set up a bit of fencing, and chase him into the "corral" and then catch him. Or perhaps you don't mind that he stays outside the run for now. I'd definitely keep that bad boy away from the rest of the flock at this point. Don't rehome him without full disclosure.

I talked to his "new mom" this morning; she wants him badness and all. She has a lot of hens and a couple Roos and thinks he will fall in line with her much larger flock. She's a friend of mine and has been trying to help all along so she knows what she is getting. I offered freezer camp but she wants to try first and if not he will be in her camp! Until then he's going to stay out of the pen until the babies are put in the basement for the night
