NC Coyotes population increasing

Coyotes are a problem in Chicago too. Researchers estimate that there are thousands of coyotes living in the city. They're generally only active at night and avoid humans so most people don't even realize coyotes live in the city.

With all due respect no they don't. If you just want to scare them use a fire cracker, water hose, screaming/yelling, clang pots together, throw sticks, do whatever. Okay, A BB gun while technically can kill just about anything under perfect conditions, if you shoot anything bigger than a squirrel or rat it is more likely to wound and cripple but not kill. Again with all due respect, if you aim a gun at something, kill it and use a gun that will give you the best chance for a clean kill while still being safe down range. I hate predators that go after my animals, but I won't let them suffer either. I know that a lot of people don't want to kill a predator, and I can respect that, it works for them. I'd use a 12 ga if I was concerned what as behind the yote, loaded with T shot or larger (really I'd use 000 buck or a slug). The 12 Ga has a limited range depending on ammo and gun. If the yote was further away and I knew there was little danger if I missed or had a pass through, I'd use a .22-250 (little danger of a pass through with this round anyway). That is just me though, here in my situation. Coyotes are very good a adapting to mans world. We might as well get used to them, it's only likely to get worse. Again no offence meant.

Coyotes are learning to adapt from us. We leave out food and trash they'll eat anything. We toss away pets. They get eaten to if not mated to and join the pack. Coyotes learn from their mistakes or those from others of their kind. It's best to have a lock on your coop as a coyote will figure out how to get it open faster than a raccoon.

Coydogs are even smarter. Do you know that a dog is the only species of canine that will follow direction just by pointing? (research being done at Duke University that I'm involved with) Imagine that intellegence mixed in a coyote.

If you've got them you will need to take drastic steps to keep them away from you and yours. Also remember those of you here on the SouthEast Coast. Rabies season is coming up real soon. Coyotes get it too

Very Interesting. I do not trust any kind of lock on my coop, as it back door sits close to edge of a hill and a sneak attack by predators would be easy if I didn't constantly monitor the area. However, I do need to sleep, eat, shower, so I use 3 square bit screws to secure the coop day and night.

Sounds like coyotes are worse in the cities (over there) than they are here in the country where we are.
I know we have a pack on the property and some more in the surrounding woods..we actually hit a young pup a couple years ago & took it to the vet..it was obviously not a normal dog breed...kind of an ugly, scraggly puppy(i didnt think that was possible! lol). They still fixed it up and it went to the local humane society later on to be adopted.

anyway.. We've never had a coyote/livestock problem until last year, they got a couple ducks and left a trail all the way back to the hill. But mostly just muskrats and birds. I think the LARGE population of wild bunnies around here has helped keep them fed...which is probably my fault since some of my 4H rabbits got loose when i was a kid and the population kinda boomed for a couple years!

maybe it's time to let a few more loose? Seems to have kept the birds all safe for nearly 10years....I think I might have to make an auction visit soon.

I was visiting my sister in Oceanside California last week and a coyote ate her cat. Mike was the best, fattest, fluffiest, friendliest little cat out. Not only did have a good cry about it but also cried everytime her other little cat Kita went out looking for him. She is so sad about it. She hugs in constantly and she's not a huggy cat. Known Mike for 7 years poor thing. My sister said the coyotes are so bad now that her neighbours have to take a big stick when they go out walking their dog to stop them eating her dog. I haaate coyotes.

We have a coyote den just to the back of our property and dogs running through the neighborhood. We also have quite a few families of raccoons because the old neighbor fed them for 12 years before she sold her house last fall.

Neither of us own guns so we bought a bb gun and shot at a few raccoons. We felt so bad for hurting them, and it didn't keep them from coming, it only made them sneakier. When a coyote ran off with a duck, we decided since we didn't have it in us to kill either the coyotes or the raccoons, then we needed to come up with the cash for electric fencing. And that's what we did, we bought premier1's electric net. Nothing comes in our yard anymore. I had to make a way for my cats to get in and out since the back is their prime hunting ground.

The options are:
trap, kill, keep them out.

We have all manner of predators here, including coyotes, for years. They are in suburbs and cities also. The best way to avoid trouble all around appears to be electric fence, which is what I plan to use. Proximity to the house will help a little, but very hungry animals can be bold, as you all know.
