But these days, I actually think it's a lot safer than it was: they have things like procedures for landing at uncontrolled airports, TCAS, all that fancy stuff. But it still doesn't excuse the controllers' behaviour.

"...Well, I can't quite make out what you're saying (that makes the two of us) so I'm going to call you I.S.S. 3933!"

ETA: So a turtle... that's what it was. I heard there was a car on the runway doing a "sweep" but the reception from their radio was crap and I couldn't tell what was going on

Someone else heard the Eurofly thing as well? LOL, that was funny.
 
Actually after reading an article, it was a large group of female turtles coming out of the marsh to lay their eggs. I saw the same thing along the causeway to Chincoteague Island once. The turtles were busily preparing their nests, and the crows and gulls were raiding them.
