She is doing well (I think). She has been alert and drinking the mixer we made. I unfortunately was only able to obtain a large needle on such short notice so gave the penicillin I had subcutaneously. I am hoping I got it in as she is so small. I was a vet tech many years ago but never worked on anything this small. She ate good most of today and is pooping..I just worry with the scab that there might be an infection I can't see (everything looks dry and no pus that I can see or swelling or discoloring) as she didn't seem to interested in food after we had been gone for about 5hrs. Are poultry like other animals when they have an infection? We had left some mixer in with her when we left but I am not sure if she ate.How is she doing now?
I have given her the antibiotic for 3 days now..should that be it (3 to 7 days is what I read). Should I wait until I see other symptoms and try again. I don't want to mess with the scab but she smells fine. She attacks the water dropper when she does feed.Chickens are pretty staunch in their behavior and often hide symptoms when they are not feeling well. Signs of infection would include lethargy, pus, foul odor and not eating/drinking.
Eating/drinking and pooping is hopeful. No swelling or discoloration sounds good too.
I think you are doing all you can.
She was rather uncooperative.@cameobelle , can you post a pic of this chick just doing normal chicken stuff, eating, standing, looking cute or whatever? Thanks.
She was rather uncooperative.. I have a video from earlier but can't fine how to post it. These are as good as I could get tonight.
