Necropsy of my Lav. Orp. whom I found dead this A.M. 12/14/14

Did you check the roof of her beak? To see if she had an obstruction there?

No.... since this was my "first ever" gutting to learn something, field dressing took over.... "Strip the bird and into the frying pan" type mentality.... I can't believe how little time I spent looking at stuff.... Pick it up, looks good to me... next step...same thing... I did notice the yellow color of the food in the gizzard which was ODD to say the least... I figured it was the fresh corn kernels from the snack time deal... usually gizzard fillings is a more neutral color from what I remember....
Lets all hope I don't have to get really good at this.... I'll run out of chickens....

Is this the heart that is almost black, it seems very dark to me, I suspect it shouldn't look that way, however, I really don't know. Miy hen also didn't have hardly any blood as well when I did her necropsy. I would think there should be blood.

Pancreas, Gall bladder or Spleen......

I work in surgery for a living and I butchered a couple of my roosters recently, from my experience no organs should be black in color, ever. Of course I could be wrong, but usually black on tissue means the tissue is dead or dying. When we butchered my roosters we did the ax on the chopping block style and I was surprised at the small amount of blood that came out, also very little blood after that while cleaning them out.

I know from having parrots and small finches, that they have very little blood, that is why even a broken blood feather or broken toe nail can cause death.

That black thing is the spleen, not the heart.

I think the black organ is the gallbladder where dark green bile is stored. that is where the droppings get their greenish color from bilirubin. Here is an article about it with a picture:

Chicken Gallbladder surprise by Jennifer Connell

I do realize that the picture to the left is pretty disgusting. But, it will make the story better! I think. This is a true story, and it happened at our family dinner table one night while we were eating. My mom roasted a chicken. (reallllllyyy gooood recipe)
Before you roast it you take all the jiblets out. (The guts) Liver, heart, etc. They're edible just in case you weren't aware of that.
Anyhow, my dad likes to eat all that stuff! I don't touch it, I just like the chicken! So he's sitting there eating this stuff, and he took a bit of something. He immediately spit it out and the look on his face was hilarious. What he bit into was something green! He was very concerned about ecoli virus. He called a poison control center and told them about what happened and how he thought it might be ecoli. He was going on and on about how rancid and vile it tasted. I was cracking up. I probably should have been, but the way it happened just seemed so funny. The poison control center told him it was probably the gallbladder that got left in the chicken. So what my dad had started to eat was the chicken's gallbladder! Eww! You just would have had to have been there to see how funny it was. We still joke about it. This happened about a year ago. I could not stop laughing! The reason I decided to post this is because my mom is roasting the same kind of chicken and so I thought about the gallbladder incident. Plus, I needed something to post about! lol Has anyone had a weird experience like this?
