I am in need of 3 bantam hens and 1 rooster.

I am not picky about the kind, just that they are show quality and easy to handle.

These are for my children who are in 4-H.

We had a winning rooster last year but our Michigan winter was so rough on him that he and the ladies are no longer show quality. This wont happen again as my hubby is in the process of building a much better barn just for the kids poultry.

So please if you know anyone who has show ready birds let me know. We have less than 2 months before the fair. Everyone I have called is out.

I may seem like a horrid procrastinator but the reality is I had a hard pregnancy and just recently had my little boy at 42 years. So poultry and the fair were last on my list. Now that I am much better I am trying hard to get my kids their birds.

I am a first year 4H poultry leader in Canada and my 4H kids have been raising their birds either from day-old chicks, or have been hatching their own.

Maybe it's a different curriculum in the U.S., but it doesn't seem like a good learning experience if you're simply buying show-ready birds.

If you still have your birds from last year, you should have been hatching and raising chicks from them for this year.

This is just for them (showmanship) not really for them to win for their bird. But how they show the bird. So it is quite different. And this is also the first time we have not raised from chicks. But we tore down all but one coop and got rid of all but 3 chickens. Unfortunately, the coop that had our birds was not adequate against our crazy winter. The Grand Champ got frost bite. By the way we never thought for a minute any of our chickens would win themselves. That was a complete surprise. We just want nice small birds that they can handle to try and win showmanship.

Make sense?

Our kids have several, ducks, geese, turkeys and will have meat birds that were all raised from chicks. I don't help them even a wee bit in that area other then ordering. They want winners in the meat category they have to work for it. We are some of the only parents that do that as well. Many of the parents do most of the work for their kids instead. But we are not like that.

Sorry I did not explain that better. I am not trying to take a short cut to win for the bird. Just so they don't have to show a huge meat bird. Judges here don't want kids to show big birds or meat poultry of any kind.
