Need a big mean rooster breed to fight ravens

Oh man, have you ever seen a raven? They're wayyyy huger than crows. I saw one a few months ago for the first time and I couldn't even believe it's size. It was bigger than a hawk!

I am familiar with the multiple (sub)species of ravens in North America. Both approximate a red-tailed hawk in size. Ravens and crows both ill equiped for taking on a adult large ground fowl on the ground. I am therefore inclined to doubt original observation as reported if actual contact between combatants involved.

You can tell that to the pile of feathers in my yard that was a 1/2 grown or more African goose. If you check out ravens in Alaska, I hope you note the size difference between southern coast raven vs interior raven, the size is at least doubled. As I stated before, these attacks were a single raven, on the ground, tangling with the rooster and in one case I saw also a 1/2 grown china white goose at the same time and still would not leave till I showed up.

I totally believe it. Just because you dont THINK it could happen doesnt meant it cant.

I agree with one of the earlier posts. You're going to need a Livestock Guardian Dog. If the ravens are confident enough to take out half grown geese, no rooster is going to last long. Surely a strong fighting breed will go down first protecting his ladies, but what happens when the raven comes back the next day?

Get a good guard dog and leave him with the chickens 24/7.

The ravens in Alaska are Huge !! My grown son was on his Mt Bike and one just about sent him down the mt. side end over end.He was too close to their nest!! A dog trained to watch for and chase would be best our dobe does that here but we have "normal" ravens Good Luck!

I'd lean towards a guard dog too. Or maybe check Craig's List to see if anyone has any roosters near you? Sometimes people just give them away. Noone wants the mean roos. If you place an ad, you might get a lot of replies?

My understanding of Centrarchid's post was not that he doubted your birds were attacked and killed, but that he doubted that it was by a raven. I will echo those doubts. It sounds much more like the actions of a hawk or falcon.

Your understanding is correct. Ravens are fiesty but alone would have a difficult time with any bird their size or larger. Defending a carcass left by another predator more plausible. A video would be needed to backup observation.

After living here 25 years, I know the difference between a hawk and a raven. If you want to call me a liar then do so elsewhere! I'm looking for suggestions for a rooster bad enough to protect my birds so I don't have to start killing a protected species that is destroying my animals.
