Need a Computer Guru--Norton System Works

Quote:
I fully agree 100%.
I dropped Norton, and then I dropped McAffee. They were both trying to take over everything on my computer and were a pain in the butt daily.
Avast is free and wonderful! It and Adaware keep everything running great. They don't bother me, and I don't bother them except to occasionally run Adaware.

So you guys use Avast all the time. I've not had a problem that I know of, with it....hmmmm, thank you!

One of the new things Norton does, which may help someone else dx a problem they may be having with them is (Please excuse terminology which isn't correct.):

Your subscription will say it's outdated, no matter how long you've had it. Why? Well, after many painful marathon sessions with their outsource people, I now know this:

As of Sept. '07, they "ping" to your computer, and your computer is supposed to answer. If it doesn't, it messes everything up.

One reason it might not answer, such as in my case, is being on dial-up, thus not online.

I finally did fool it, after some raised blood pressure. I set my clock back to August 1st, 2007, every 20 days or so. (I figured that out myself. They never suggested it.) But I doubt it would work with a 2008 version.

So you guys use Avast all the time.

I've installed Avast and Adaware on every computer that I have owned over the past six years; I've built around several dozen since then-including quite a few render farms and I still haven't paid a dime for it and NEVER had a problem with either. The only time I ever notice Avast is when the daily update bot chimes in with " Your virus database has been updated." How painful is that, I ask you?

It's not at all, actually. Maybe it seemed *too* easy. I've been half waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Well, if you're still up and running with it, then I'm going to relax and not worry about it anymore. I did get a msg. this morning that there's a new version available. Do you update when there's one each time?

I've tried everything I can think of. Been saving everything left and right to my flash drives in hopes I don't loose anything. Plan to dump the hole ball of wax and start over. One good thing about E machines they have PC Angel to fix all your boo-boos!

I have the new Norton, Firewall and Antivirus. Plus the "System Works" which is suppose to fix problems. That's what got me into this problem!!

Yeaaaaaa…… Umm, you asked for a computer pro’s recommendation, I gave one. CA, is used by ALL of the top 500 companies, you might as well follow the leader. Avast is free because it isn’t very good or popular, people like it because it’s better than Norton. Follow your contemporaries, ask your buddies, ask your friends but believe a professional who typically gets paid for his opinion and repairs technology for a living.
Good luck and happy computing.
Peace,
Dave

I'm really glad you're up and running!

What OS do you have?

Everyone recommended AVG to me, but I had a terrible time trying to install it. (So did the computer shop I took it to.) I was told it was a problem with them and Vista being compatible. I don't know if that's true, or not, but it was a pain.

Finally, out of desperation, I had my son look on the internet from work, and we found mention of Avast.

I installed it with no problem, and it's been running fine...several weeks now. And as you see, 2 people here have been running it a really long time, and think it's very good. I have to admit, it's given me no trouble so far, and I'm going to continue with it.

I'm not qualified to have an opinion on this, unless you are running Vista. (Which I don't mind as much as other people seem to, for some reason.) In which case you might have trouble with AVG, as I did.

I'll bet you'll be fine whichever you choose. Thanks for reminding me that I need to back my files up today; I try to do it on Sunday's, when there's a little less going on around me....except the garden, of course!

Oh rats, Dave, I got so excited that people said Avast was good, I forgot about your recommendation. Back to the drawing board. *sigh*

Oh well was looking for cheap, if not free, lol. CA it is. Will have to wait until payday.

Anyone have Quicken Deluxe 2007? I can't find my disc. I've got the 2005 but have updated since then and it won't restore the updated file into the system.
