Need a dog good with chickens

Hello, and welcome! Like people have stated above you need to get a puppy and train it not to bother them. Whatever puppy that you get, just make sure that it will grow big enough so that it won't be easily carried of by any predators, too! I know that coyotes and bobcats can carry off the smaller breeds like Chihuahua's and mini poodles and such.

Hi and welcome to BYC. I wish you luck with protecting your flock.

This is a useful link of BYC guides to take a look at announcements-feedback-issues-guides.3 I’d suggest including your location using the guide in that link, if you have not already done so. You can use this link to contact members in your area - Find your State's thread.

Best wishes

I would avoid a mastiff too aggressive and banned in some areas of country. Otherwise the list that was provided was good. I have seen good and bad with Pyrenese breed. One guy had three pups and couldn’t get his to stop chasing his chickens. But I’ve seen a lot that did well here locally. I saw Anatolian Shepherds here as guardians for livestock and they did well.

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
No dog is going to be the way you want them to be with chickens until you show them what it is you expect of them. Some will gladly do it. Others will be constantly fighting their instincts to kill rather than protect. It's these dogs that can never be trusted.

It is all very much based on the individuals personality. Just like it is with whether a rooster is going to be human aggressive or not.

Hi and welcome to BYC :frow We're so happy you've decided to join us :ya
So sorry for your losses, I ended up adding two to three hot wires around the base of my tractors and had to add 2x4 welded wire to reinforce the lid. And don't trust staples to hold your wire, screws and washers do the trick. Coons jumped up and down on my lid until they tore the wire loose from the staples.
