We are new to having chicks. We just got them Saturday I have one little Rhode Island Red who looks like she is having issues with elimination. She has a messy rear end. I washed her off and she looks swollen around opening with (white?) droppings trying to come out.

Will she be alright? She seems alright, other than she keeps pecking at her behind. What else should I do other than wipe her bottom? We purchased wood shavings from Rural King for their bedding. She is the only one of 10 that is having problems.

I would appreciate any advice. She is so cute.

Take her out and soak her bottom in warm water and wipe with a washcloth. You may even need to se your hands to get it all out. Also you need to totally dry her before going back in with a blow dryer. If her vent stays clogged she will die.

The others will peck at her until they kill her or make her very sick. If she is all red or bleeding I would suggest keeping her away from the others in a different box until she heals up. If she is just wet or gross they maybe will stop pecking at her if she is clean and dry.

Also - dont know if you are, but you should use a red heat lamp, it helps with pecking and also masking any red spots on your babies behind. Hope this helps.
