Hello Everyone,
I'm just now joining BYC after months of searching this site for advice on raising my two Americaunas and two Barred Rocks. They were just the most beautiful creatures ever! However, a mean neighbor reported us and they had to go. Now they are living happily ever after on a gorgeous farm in Naples. We were so fortunate to find a wonderful home for them on short notice.

My question is to all of you out there who are in the same circumstance as me. Your ladies have been ripped from your home and heart and you don't know what to do. The county I live in has no tolerance for ANY poultry related bird within county limits and yet my neighbor can have a 200 pound pot bellied pig! Where is the justice? I just don't get it. The only and I mean the ONLY negative to my girls was they were all just getting really good at egg laying and they were vocal for about an hour each morning between 8-9am. Other than that, you never knew they existed. They had full run of our backyard and we were even getting grass to grow in areas it wouldn't before because of all the fertilizer and scratching they were doing searching for bugs!

Is there a breed out there that is NOT vocal at egg laying time or even at any time? Please let me know if you have any experience with them if they exist.

Thank you for your time!

so sorry you couldn't keep your chickens. I don't know of any hens that don't cackle after egg laying. Mine even cackle before daylight sometimes. Maybe someone else here has some other ideas for you. Hope you can get them back soon. And welcome and so glad you joined BYC

I live in the woods in North Florida so I am able to have our flock, sorry to hear about what happened to you, I have spent some time trying to find state law on this for you has state law supersedes city and county, unfortunately our state does not make it easy, you may want to contact the state Agricultural department to inquire on state laws on keeping poultry and to also include the potbellied pig which would be consider keeping swine. It may end up being you must have a certain amount of acreage to raise/own either unfortunately even though poultry has become more of a domesticated bird they are not recognized at this time has a domestic pet.

Welcome to BYC. You're going to have to start at the local level. Go to your planning and zoning department and find it in writing. Then contact your district commissioner/representative and go to work on him/her. Perhaps that person can persuade other commissioners to come up with an agreement that will satisfy everyone. Make sure you approach the person with your ducks (chickens) in a row regarding the benefits and "green" environmental aspect of owning chickens.

from Sara Jane in Ohio. I'm very sorry to hear about you having to give up your girls. I'm glad they were able to find a great home on such a short notice. I cannot help you as I am new to the poultry seen, but I wish I could. I wish you the best of luck. Please keep us updated.
