Need advice on amputating a chick's leg

PulletNewbie,

I had a chick with the same problem. I think it started as a slipped tendon, and the poor thing ended up with a leg much as you described. It got caught on things, and she had very little mobility. I opted to do the amputation myself, rather than euthanize her. It's been about 5 weeks now, and she is doing pretty well. She is able to hop around on the one leg. She's clumsy at times, and rests a lot, but she can get to food and water, and seems much more comfortable. If you would like the details on how to do it, let me know and I'll share with you.

Wishing you the best,
Tracy
I have a similar situation. The foot died. I clipped it off with sterilized sharp scissors. The stump healed nicely but as she grows the whole leg sticks syraight out to the side and gets caught on everything. It really needs to be amputated up to the thigh as it us preventing her from getting around. She is small, eats and drinks and appears to be healthy. Please tell me every step you took to amputate. We need to do this asap! I appreciate your help.

I have a chick with twisted leg. I have tried to brace it and somehow the little thing keeps getting the brace off.
It was getting around quite well so I decided to start giving him social time- a few hours a day with the hatch mates. Apparently that was a bad idea. I guess they were picking at it or he was trying to move too much because I noticed today there is no skin on the joint where the leg twists out- just a badly swollen bone.

Between this and even if the skin heals- he has such bad tremors/spasms in the leg, I’m sure it would be less work to just have no leg.

I’m curious what you all would do, the chick is only a couple weeks old so it should be a quick snip and some powder to stop the bleeding- if there is any (the foot is ghost white).
