Hi everyone! I’m a new emu mom. We adopted Emmett the Emu last week. He’s 16 years old and has mainly been fed bread, frozen corn (thawed) and occasional apples and spinach. I’d like to change his diet to something more nutritious. From what I’ve read he need ratite food or chicken pellets. I tried chicken pellets and even sweet feed but he’s not interested. Any ideas how to teach an old emu new tricks and get him to eat different food than he’s used to?

All the fresh food you can get -- like spinach and apples.

Emoooz luuuurv fruit, fresh or dried. For economy, a Biggie Size of dried grapes (sultanas) is good for treats.

Thanks. Tried fresh grapes today and he spit them out. He loves apples and spinach is all he will eat so far. So far I’ve tried grapes, kale, lettuce, bananas, chicken feed, sweet feed, dried worms and no go. Is it ok if he won’t eat any kind of feed pellets?

You'd best get 'core' advice from those with pet emus, EmuSue. My birds are tame-wild, thus they only get treats from me. I know they like fresh grapes because they plunge vigorously into a big ol' bush to get to the grapes on the old vine that snakes through that bush.

And don't forget: ahem . . . all your pet birds are sooks. You may have to lock him in a cupboard for a few days -- like naughty children!! -- then see what he'll eat.

Mwu ha ha ha!!

Mazuri is the best! We have a friend that works at a zoo that told us about this feed. They even have different types of feed for the different stages of the emu's life and it's very affordable. Most feed stores will order it for you or getting a pallet is always nice too : )
