It may be more of a protest, then screaming in pain. However, it is fine to seperate them for your own peace of mind. Just remember that lone chickens are never happy. As stated in a previous post, I have a Black Australorp mounting a Silkie. The difference is, she is very willing, and will even ask him. Our other cockerel was a big fan of the ambush tactic for mating, but he has grown out of that thankfully.My boy is a bit clumsy though. He kind of falls around when he mounts the hens, and he holds onto them for support. Mango always screams when he does that.
