Need advice on my peachick....Help guys!

Well I have to disagree about all this post, these are the thing I learn NOT to do. way most people start out raising peachicks.

Check the link to leggs site. yes he raises thousands every year.

Deerman, I trust you and Steve. You guys are on here answering questions all the time and you both seem very knowledgeable, even if you sometimes disagree, lol. I know they need to be on the wire, but putting them on a softer surface seemed to be the sensible thing to do with the issue that it is having, like I said if for nothing else but to make it more comfortable. I can change to pine, but they seem to enjoy the sand. If I'm wrong someone else chime in here.

I have read some on the upa site about different leg issues, and all seem to point to using complex b vitamins. I read somewhere else to use A vitamins. I have read everything from vitamins to brewers yeast, geesh. I've not a clue! Chime in guys with the different issues you've seen. Lend me your knowledge, lol. God knows I need it as I don't want to lose him over something that I could possibly fix, if I can figure it out.

If you were to read leggs site at 4 weeks old they are off the wires and on wood floor with Pine shavings. Do to the fact that the wire can make their feet swore.

It's off the wire floor and has been for days! I have read and read and read some more. I am sorry, but this is more than a case of a sore foot or leg due to wire flooring. Of that I am absolutely positive. The flooring isn't the issue anymore. The issue now is what is actually wrong and how do I treat it.

Well, I told you how to fix the problem, put the baby on straw (something soft) you can even give it a folded wash cloth. I may not have been raising peachicks for years, but it has been over 2 years. I lost my first few to causes I did not know, but I eventually figured things out by trying different things.

I raise my peachicks on medicated chick feed for the first 2 to 3 weeks. From there their feed is mixed 1/2 chick, 1/2 gamebird for about a month and then they go to straight gamebird mixed with scratch and a high protein catfood (Ocean whitefish, which they love). He should have been off the wire within days of hatching.

If he has a bubble on the bottom of the foot, he may have bumble foot.

Trust me, it may not hurt to try an amatures way, but it is up to you since you already stated "Deerman, I trust you and Steve." I am sorry you do not trust what I am saying, but I was a beginner at one time also. In the beginning I even had a couple people tell me you cannot hatch peachicks in an incubator, but I do it all the time now, after many failed attempts and I started to think it was true.

Regardless, good luck and hope your help comes in time.

This is either a splayed leg or achilles tendon problem. He cannot or will not stand on it and the leg is totally horizontal to his body now. It has progressed much further. I originally thought is was just the foot, but it's more than that. I never said he had a bubble on the bottom of his foot. I think I said he seemed to be in pain when I pressed on his foot, was unsure. I also think I recall saying that I could see nothing visibly wrong.

He is and has been on something soft for several days now. I disagree with taking them off wire within days of hatching. Some keep them on wire for 6-12 months. The wire did not cause his problem. Being off the wire at this point is merely a comfort factor. Also I do not believe the feed has anything to do with it. I have read everything I can get my hands on regarding peafowl and all recommend game bird starter.

Also countrybum, I did not mean to discount your recommendations, but I had been talking to Steve personally and he knew how the issue had progressed. I guess I had not detailed it enough in the last few posts. No one seems to know what is wrong or be able to help at this point. I am just going on what little info I have obtained from reading posts and articles and trying different things now.

Thank you all for trying to help.

Could he have some how caught it in the wire and pulled it? I have seen that recently with a couple baby chicks.

Is it kind of like this: (If you look she moves with her right leg straight out)

I don't think so, but I could be wrong. I think it could be an Achilles tendon slip, if so, not much hope from what I can find. The leg totally turns away from the body and he can't stand/walk. I just can't find a lot of info about it. Much of what I have read is due to a lack of vitamins and most suggest b complex, so we started him on b complex shots 2 days ago. I read last night it may also be due to a lack of manganese. I don't have a clue where to get that tho. I have tried a little splint on him to pull the leg in closer under the body, but I don't know if that will work. I'm losing hope now.

I read on one of the threads, someone tied the 2 legs together with dental floss, which caused the chick to start baring weight on both legs. Maybe try that, it cannot hurt. But there has to be enough slack for the chick to stand and walk. I did it on the chick in the picture and she is fine today.
