So sorry that happened to you.

That's exactly why I suggested the barrier.

Next time move the broody into a secure area or a dog crate when you notice she becomes broody.
Good Luck with the rest of your hatch.

Thank you all. Next time she will be in a secure place from the beginning. I'm glad I have this forum to talk to people and ask questions. I'm learning so much just by reading everything.Lets hope the rest will hatch out okay.

sounds like you did exactly right under the circumstances! If she was higher on the pecking order, she'd have warned off the other hens, but it's hard to tell what to do sometimes. Don't stress over the chicks, it's sad, but it happens.

I used to leave mine in the main area too if that's where they decided to set, but now I have a little pen built next to the main pen within the coop for brooding or keeping young birds in, or even for injured birds etc. probably by the next time you have one brooding/hatching, you'll be all set up, and as soon as a hen goes broody and you want her to hatch, you can move her and her eggs into a safe place, and give her some extra eggs too if you want. If she gets up from it because you move her, it'll be early in the process and you'll know she wasn't going to 'stick' anyways (most likely).

You did what you could so just enjoy the rest of them!

I think you're right. This hen is a very timid bird and because of that she probably didn't put up to much of a fight for the chick. We'll see what happens come morning. Maybe tomorrow will be a much better day. Thanks.
