Hi, I have had quails (japanese quails) for 4 days now and they are still young about 3 weeks before laying. I just noticed one of them has a toe which is bent 90 degrees. The joint where it is bent is a bit swollen, other than that she (I think) is walking around fine. I would like advice on what I should do about it. I hope she isn't in pain.It is a long car ride to the vet so rather than put her under that stress I was hoping that there might be another solution which I can do. Does anyone know how she may have done it as well. They are on a dirt floor, there is a rather steep bank in the aviary though.

Hello and welcome! If the quail isn't limping and hobbling and getting picked on by the other birds, I wouldn't worry too much about it. It may have gotten dislocated or broken or something like that. If it doesn't impede the quail's ability to be a quail, then it's probably fine. But monitor it closely.

Many thanks for the advice, she seems to be walking around on it fine but I will watch her to make sure she isn't being picked on.

Likely the only thing you could do is re-break the toe and split it but I think it's best to just leave it alone. It probably doesn't bother her at all.

Thanks for that info. I gently moved the toe back to straight position but I think she was in pain so I left it and it has gone back to the 90degree position. She is walking around with out limping so I assume and hope she is ok with it like that.
