So a friend of mine had some eggs she was hatching in a incubator she didn't know what day they were on but she said close to lock down... 1ST I am like HOW DO YOU NOT KNOW WHEN YOU PUT THEM IN? WOW

Anyways I went out to candle them for her and when I did I saw not 1 not 2 but 3 that had shadows in the air sacs. Fully formed chicks and I could see a shadow moving in the air cell.

I think these babies are way past lock down....WHAT DOES THIS MEAN AND WHAT AM I SEEING?

Sounds like they are ready to hatch to me.I'd go ahead and get humidity up and leave em alone. I have actually Forgotten a few eggs when we went on lockdown. They hatched fine and were turned the whole time!! Good luck

so once you see shadows in the eggs they are ready to pip right?

I'v never saw anything past day 18 I never open the bator unless its a life or death thing.

Shadows in air cells indicates either hatching position prior to internal pip or internal pip itself, in which tapping, breathing and sometimes vocalizing can be heard if you put the egg up to your ear. In any case, that means you've got about two days, three at most, left until the chicks are out of their shells. It's not damaging to wait this late to raise your humidity and go into lockdown; some people I know only raise humidity once they have external pips, so you'll be just fine.

Yes. Once they pip inside, they have to pip the shell for air. Then they zip....like a lil can opener around the shell to get out. Don't lift the lid, humidity will drop and they will shrink wrap...(basically dry out the membrane killing them). Hands off from here on out.
