Need Electric fence & BEAR help. now lost broody and chicks.

I'd also ask fish and game about keeping the bear if you have to shoot it. I'm just saying if you have to shoot it would be a shame to waste the meat and hide. Maybe you will get a bearskin rug out of the deal. Not too many people can say they shot their rug.

Ohhh I have the shivers just thinking about bears! I am glad I live in S. Georgia in suburbia. The biggest threat we have is large raccoons. Good luck, let us know if you see him again.

Get the fence up ASAP and be sure the ground rod is deep and in a wet spot to give you the hottest spark.

If the bears are going thru the trash, throw a couple spray cans of Off that have bacon grease on them. A bear will lick the can a couple times then bite and when they get a mouthful of Off, they will leave rather quickly.

As I wrote this, I just wondered if pepper spray or Mace would work better, be more expensive but hummmmm. I may try that this fall when the bears pass thru and tear things up on their way to hibernate.

I live in bear country and posted on here last fall about a run in with an aggressive bear at my coop. By aggressive I mean didn't leave when I showed up and still wouldn't leave when I yelled at it and threw a chunk of wood at it. That is a bear that has no fear of humans. That makes for a dangerous bear. I went back to the house, grabbed my 12 gauge with with a few bird shot rounds and headed back out. The first round I fired over it's head. He didn't move, just looked at me. The next one was aimed at where his butt was touching the ground. This was at about 15 yards away. That one made him take off at light speed into the woods. I fired one more as a convincer. It has never come back. I don't have much fear of bears. Respect yes, fear no. I hunt them with a bow up close and personal so maybe I'm desensitized. Even bird shot will deter a bear if you sting him good. He hadn't broke into the coop yet. I think if he had I would have killed him and been justified to do so. I have the right in this state to kill if my animals are being harmed or threatened. Guess I didn't feel like killing that day. Glad you have the fence up and keep that shotgun handy. I keep one right inside the door for all predators two and four legged.

I heard a can of Ether covered in PB and with the taste of it he'll never be back.. I'm not sure if its toxic though. and I do have law enforcment grade pepper spray/tear gas that I bring outside with me along with the shotgun!

I talked to the fish and game warden again yesterday to see if he had any more tips for the hotwire. He said that beekeepers do 6 strands of hotwire to protect the hives starting at 10" and going up every 5" from there. He thinks I should put 2 more strands in between my 12", 24", and 36". and also I did get an 8' grounding rod that dBF got into the ground for me!!

Do you have dogs? I live in bear infested woods which is nice except
the one I most commonly see crossing our drive is a 700lb. black bear...
Which is why I have dogs, BIGGGG Dogs. A juvinile black
wandered too close to the yard the other day and Chevy chased him
over the hill. Seems like just the dog sent keeps the bears on
the parameter of our property. We have gardens, berry patches,
pygmy goats, trash bins.... No bears in the yard, only BIIIIGGGGG dogs.
