Turkeys seem to me to be more delicate than other poultry. They need to be carefully sheltered until they are fully feathered. I try to keep them out of the rain, wind etc. until they are fairly large. The heritage breeds are good at flying. The Broad Breasted are not. The Broad Breasted seem to have more health problems. They need to have a high protein feed. I also recommend reading the post called give me the dirt on turkeys, and searching for more information with the B.Y.C. search feature.

If you are on a low budget, there is some things you need to consider.

In our case we bought a book checked some out from the library, since it's been about 30 years since I had been around poultry. Some farm or Ag Storys have story's book in stock or can order it. It's highly desirable to read up before you purchase any chicks. This gives you chance to develop a strategy and save some money back for things you will need. Even if you do have a lot of extra money it lets you get the right equipment to start with. Because you will need to raise chicks, keep the kids happy, watch over the the teenager's, and stay out of the way of the adults, butcher the meat one,and eventually hatch eggs. Each of these stages takes a little different equipment. So it's a good idea to figure out the minimum equipment need for each stage.

Starting out you might just want to get chicks this year, then expand each year as you able to add to your equipment. That also givers you a chance to get use to all the chores you will need to do.

This forums has just as much info about turkeys as any book, But it's spread out all over the place in many threads, so it can be hard to find the good information. Also the information doesn't always work for a really small flock, or is impractical for the small flock.
