You may if you have not already call the local PD and at least have it noted so that if they do not want to take care of the problem you have more than your word against his but rather an offical legal report and an official documenting the damage.

1 crushed baby aspirin (81mg) per cup of drinking water is a low safe dose (and roughly equivalent to a dose oft quoted on BYC of five 325mg aspirins per gallon of water). Since aspirin is a blood thinner it shouldn't be used during active bleeding or if internal bleeding suspected. Change out for a fresh batch at least once daily. After injury it is not uncommon for a bird to not want to eat or drink yet staying hydrated is crucial. Often, pain relief can go a long way toward inspiring them to want to drink/eat. I've sometimes had Metacam prescribed by a vet for inflammation/injuries and it can be effective.

Electrolytes for shock (their biggest enemy) - a bit of Pedialtye or Gatorade will do in a pinch if poultry electroltyes not on hand. If not readily drinking, try spritzing some on watermelon or some other fruit they really like. Accomplishes hydration at the same time.

Quiet comfortable place to recuperate, not too hot and not too cold, with all their needs close at hand. Those with leg injuries shouldn't be jumping up onto or off of perches till healed.

It can be quite normal for leg injuries to take a few weeks to feel substantially better.

Sorry to hear! My neighbors dogs got 1 of my frizzles the other day. (though it was nothing like your situation and suffering of your birds, I think this was quick and there was only a wing left. Still sad to me though)
The neighbors dogs continued to get out multiple times a day and I was on dog patrol 24/7 for 3 days. The other night, the female got squished in the road. I wonder why it takes some ppl so long to figure obvious things out..........how many times of the dogs getting out, the neighbors always bringing 1 back and telling you your dogs are out, eating a chicken, then 1 getting smashed in the road before one figures it out!

There are leash laws in many cities/towns. Good that you took pics. I would call animal control and pd if needed to document. Because it very well MAY happen again! Or at least if you see the dog running at large again, similar problems as me , things will already have been recorded.

I would have called my local PD and had them come take a report. Nothing stands up in court better than photos and police reports.

I put an electric fence up around my pasture pen as I lost 40 chicks earlier this year and I know your pain. Cost me $300 but its a good defense in depth strategy.

Update:
I ended up processing about 90% of the birds that were destroyed. I quickly got them cooled and package up. HOWEVER a bunch of the meat went 'blue' especially near the paunch, and had to be thrown out. There were bite marks in all near the backs, and therefore we will be eating these ourselves (after getting each to 160-degrees in oven) as a result.

The neighbor quickly attempted resolution and made an agreement to pay in full by his next pay period. He also offered an ATV if I wanted instant payment (I would rather have cash after seeing his atv condition). We agreed to $300 for the loss of the 21 birds.

2-of the birds were injured and salvaged/appear to have recovered.

1-bird that I had in the brooder for recovery ended up dying the next morning and had to be disposed of.

We did get to taste our first cornish. I have no problem with it and feel that I would rather partake than throw-away. We cooked to 160-degrees over the grill for about 1-hr...and it was delicious.

They seem to all weight about 2.5lbs dressed, which is actually a decent size for my family of 3 with a 3-course meal. Our local grocery store serves this size often on the rotisserie.

WHAT A WAY TO RAISE THE FIRST BATCH!!!

So sorry for the loss of your flock. I hope your neighbor pays up--seems like he has good intentions.......that's good news! Maybe it was just an accident that his dog got out.....

My neighbors both have dogs....one neigbor has one dog chained to the dog house, and I know if he got loose, that would not be on purpose....he's never loose. And the other neighbor has a little dog that is loose all the time. I'm sure he could damage a chicken, but he's on the small side, and he doesn't come over--he's real old too.

My chickens free range during the day, and they mostly stay in our backyard, which is surrounded by woods--we've got a little over 6 acres, but if one of my chickens strays over to the neighbors and gets attacked, it would be my loss, since I let them loose. They are just happier when they can forage around....instead of pacing in their run. I figure it's a good, happy life for them.

Good to hear a neighbor taking responsibility! Hope you guys will still be friendly!

Try to work things out with your neighbor and check your local laws. I live in a rural farming community and dogs killing livestock of any kind is not taken lightly. Here a dog running loose on your property and just chasing your livestock can be killed on sight. If it kills the livestock the police will destroy the dog.

I love dogs and have no intention of harming someone else's pet, unless I must to protect my animals. The death sentence is a huge motivator for people to keep things private and the police out.

We have lots of dogs running loose here and they never bother my chickens. They are in the field next to the goats and the Pyrenees guarding the goats scare them off. Not smart enough to see the fence I guess.

If he makes good on the issue, take it no further. Call it a learning experience for both of you.

I used hardware cloth and 2x4 wire on my tractor. What type of wire did you use?

Also, buy a paintball gun.
