Need good advice on building a brooder

Building a brooder is really about where you will place it and what materials you have on hand. You are basically looking for something that will keep them contained and unwanted critters out. It should be easy to access for cleaning and exchange of food and water. It should also be sized sufficiently to house them through their growing stages until able to be set out to their permanent home.

My favorite is to use a big watermelon box available at places such as Sam's Club and Costco. They are generally free for the asking.

Check Craig's List under the materials section. You can often pick up lumber scraps for free.

Pine shavings seem to be the best material to use for litter.

Hope this helps.

Here's what I built. I had everything I needed to make it on hand. It is 4'x5'x16". The divider is nice to have if you have different age chicks. I would like to build another one, as it doesn't take very long for them to outgrow it. I have never hatched any quail, so I have no idea how big they are when they hatch. I would think you would need something bigger or a more of them for 100 chicks.
