Ha ha! Nice try, but as i just found out today from the "breeds" section that it is in fact not a goose, but a duck! Darn feed store didn't know what they were talking about ...

Our goose was a mistake goose, a supposedly a duckling from the feed store mistake. Like the ugly duckling, but a goose, not a swan. He/she is a chinese goose, and since i really don't want to stick my finger in my gooses butt, he/she can just remain mysterious. She bites, but it's not really hard, unless you really make her mad, or run away. I was goofing around, and my little boy said that the goose was coming after me, so i turned around and pretended to run... i was sure i was faster than the goose... and she bit me so hard on the back of the knee that i had a huge bruise for weeks. but usually she just bites my fingers if i pet her, and it doesn't really hurt. I LOVE my goose. I hope yours is half as awesome.

I LOVE my goose. I hope yours
is half as awesome.

Awesome, or evil? I see your sig line you know! Lol, plus it turned out to be a duck, so hopefully even if it does turn on me it wont be as bad.

Good luck with your guck or doose or whichever it is!! I have huge differences in personality between my ducks and geese...and also big differences between breeds of geese. The Chinese are loud and bossy compared to the Dewlaps, who I consider to be the Homer Simpsons of geese in that they are lazy, slow and peaceful. I also love my Sebastopols as well. As juveniles, they have been "singing" to me, almost songbird like sounds.

I've hatched some geese, and gotten them at all different ages. The Sebastopols and Dews are easily coaxed into eating from my had, my lap.....very willing. And, I find that my geese are so much friendlier than my call ducks or my silkie ducks. The only ducks that are anywhere near as friendly as my baby muscovies, and when my first batch got to a certain age, they weren't as friendly.

I feed most of my geese by hand at least part of their feeding time almost every day and bring them different supplemental foods almost every day and it has paid off with them running to me and greeting me and following me all over the place. I also try to sit down with them and pick up at least a few of them every single day. Of course, there are some days I just don't have time, but I try to make time.

Good luck....

I have 3 African Geese that I bought back in the spring. I actually thought I was getting ducks for the grandkids. Turns out they were labeled wrong in the store and it is hard to tell the difference when they are little. This is my first time at being around geese so I didn't know the basics of care. I fed them the same medicated starter feed as I fed my little chicks and there didn't seem to be a problem with that. Now that they are grown, it turns out I have two males and a female. They followed us around and the grandkids were able to "love" on them until they were almost mature them the dominant male started being aggressive and "goosing" everyone when they turned their back. I taught the grandkids to not turn and run, but stand their ground and raise their arms over their heads just like the geese spread their wings before they "attack". This makes them appear bigger and seems to work at keeping the geese at a distance. They are great foragers and have helped in keeping the backyard grass under control so I don't have to mow that much. The female started laying eggs last week. She has laid a total of six at various times and different places. We rounded them up and made a nest but she has not tried to set yet. I'm not even sure they are fertile because I was told they need a large enough water container to consumate in the water. I only have a tub big enough for one at a time to get in and bathe. Would appreciate some input on this. I was trying to figure out how to post a pic but don't seem to be smart enough...lol
